Galatians 5:13-16 Law Fulfilled in Us
Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly to achieve the salvation of all those who trust in him
Matthew 5:17-20 not to destroy but to fulfill
Romans 10:3-4 Christ is the end of the law
However, the law has not been abolished or destroyed but Christ is bringing us into righteousness
What law is Christ achieving in us?
Matthew 22:37-40 Love God, Love Others
The gospel is at work in our lives to fulfill these two great commandments, not in our own power but through the work of the Spirit in the life of a believer
This is the freedom we have in the gospel to now confidently and happily live out the great commandments
Bank Account illustration- when we are broke and destitute; buying food, paying rent, paying school fees, filling our bike with petrol, paying taxes, etc is not easy or enjoyable
However, if 10 arab rupees was placed in our bank account over night, we would now have freedom and joy in all that we do, we have been empowered to live out our life as a husband, father, citizen
This is what happened when we trusted in Christ. All of our debt and poverty was removed and we were filled with the riches of God and his righteousness (Ephesians 1:18, 3:8, Philippians 4:19, Colossians 1:27)

The Misuse of Freedom

Breaking of the first great commandment to love God with all our heart (vs 4-6)
If we add anything to Christ or remove anything from Christ we have not loved God (John 8:42, John 14:7-11)
It is God’s will that we trust in Christ and Christ alone (John 6:40-41)
Akash taught last week what this looks like in our life
Breaking of the second great commandment to love others as our selves (vs 13)
Using our liberty as an occasion to serve ourselves and our flesh
When we are brought into Christ we died to sin and also our flesh to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:1-6)
Akash will teach more of this next week in the end of chapter 5

The Purpose of Freedom

We love Christ who first loved us and by faith we enter into relationship with God (Romans 5:8)
This love causes us to wait for the day we are reconciled to God
This love causes us to run after the righteousness that is found in Christ, to pursue Christ and Christ alone
We love others knowing that we were undeserving of love when God saved us from our sin and shame
Before salvation we were living for ourselves but the newness of life has changed us from the inside out
As we become like Christ we serve others and place them before ourselves (John 13:12-15)

The Agent of Freedom

Through the Spirit we have connection to God and his freedom
The Spirit drew us to the Father through Christ by the Word of Truth (John 16:7-13)
The Spirit works in us according to truth until we are brought into full relationship with God in heaven (vs 7-8) running a race that we are called into
Through the Spirit we walk in truth and righteousness to fulfill all the works God has called us to do
The only way we can fulfill the command to love others is to walk in the Spirit (vs 16)
The Spirit and the flesh are contrary to eachother (vs 17)
The Gospel was not a one time event that happened in our life when we got saved but is a continual work of the Holy Spirit drawing us and conforming us to the will of the Father into the image of the Son
Are you misusing your freedom you have in Christ?
Are you trusting in religious works to make you righteous before God and keep your salvation?
Are you living a life of fulfilling the lust of the flesh in order to serve yourself?
The only answer for you today is to walk in the power of the Spirit, realize the purpose of your freedom is to love God and to love others and ask God to work in your life today. Surrender your life to him and walk in newness of life.
