Martyred

James was killed by the sword in Acts
Andrew in Greece died by crucifixion
Philip unknown
Bartholomew Flayed alive, stoned, beheaded
Thomas impaled
Simon the zealot crucified, sawed in half, crucified
Thaddeus ax blows that severed his head
Matthew sword
James son of Alpheus crucified
Peter crucified upside down
John tortured, boiled in oil, exile to Papmos, died of old age
most of these accounts are legend
these apostles probably died horrible deaths
by this time in their lives they had the faith to endure the torture
they also knew the power of the grace of God
the three that were thrown into the fiery furnace went without fear
why because they knew their God, knew His power, knew they would not be alone
they were in there together with their Lord
in this storm the Apostles were going through they were all afraid of death
afraid of the waves
afraid of lack of control of the situation
this storm was to big for their skill
the waves were over the sides of the boat
things were getting desperate
fear gripped them all
finally they woke Jesus up and accused Him of not caring
Mark 4:38 LSB
And Jesus Himself was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion; and they got Him up and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
with Jesus we go through storms together
is what these men and all of us need to learn
read Luke 8 22-25

Lets Go

V 22
Jesus tells his men go to the other side of the lake
in obedience to the call of Jesus
unlike Jonah in disobedience
the fire storm of the 3 was because they refused to bow to the image and defy Nebuchadnezzar
storms in life come for different reasons
to discipline
to raise your level of faith
to teach us something
these men are followers of Jesus
they believe in Him
They are obeying Him so why the storm?
the storm that Job recieved was not for disobedience
he was probably the most righteous person on the planet at the time
but still he needed to learn, grow, mature
storms are a way that God teaches us what He wants us to learn
even though Jesus seems far away, and asleep.
He is right there in the boat with us

Discipled

V 23 Jesus needed to teach His men some lessons
He needed them to have an experience of being afraid for their lives
what are some of the lessons they learned
God’s sovereignty over nature ,was a head knowledge
that needed to be made real
Psalm 89:8–9 LSB
O Yahweh God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Yah? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them.
Jesus had already proved to them about the fish
the healings
the demon control
Jesus could have sat the men down and told them about ..
Job 38 16 -30
but they needed to experience the fear
nothing teaches better than having the waves come over the top of the boat
for them to to learn about
God’s ability to protect them
their faith needs to increase
Jesus destination was the other side
V 22 lets go over to the other side
if Jesus says we are going to the other side then you can’t drown half way there
Jesus slept in confidence of the goal
Jesus had a predestined meeting with a man on the other side
these men needed that same confidence
we need that same confidence
this is why we go through storms
and Jesus is in the boat with us
when Jesus gets int the boat there is a destination
there is a predetermined destination that the boat is going to
Jesus is fully relying on the Father to get Him to that place on the other side
so if Jesus is asleep
make yourself comfortable
it’s going to get rough and your feet are going to get wet
you will learn to trust even more in your Redeemer

Who Is This?

V 25
their head knowledge was insufficient
God need’s to bring a calamity into our lives to move us
Newton’s first law states that if a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force.
our faith will not be strengthened until there is a force to propel us
our head knowledge of God needs to become heart knowledge
our heart Knowledge is the one who trusts
Who is this? is what our heart needs to learn from our head
the disciples know but they don’t know
Who is this?
this is what storms teach us
the storms that threaten our lives, change our way of thinking
storms that force us to look heavenward
are what the disciples went through to get to the point of how we started this sermon
their total faith in Jesus to either take them through
or take them home
until we are taken home we also will go through storms
But always remember Jesus is in the boat
