Introduction:
Words matter, understanding the meaning behind a word matters.
Within Biblical Theology words like, “Justification, Sanctification, Glorification” have fundamental/foundational truths associated with them.
There is a theological/doctrinal word that I want us to focus on today as we prepare our hearts for communion. That word is Propitiation.
Propitiation is a big word that means a wrath-removing sacrifice.
In order to understand this word we have to understand a few things first.
Number One...
God is holy and righteous, and He hates sin and punishes it with His wrath
11 God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,
We are all sinners who deserve God’s wrath and condemnation
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
But God, in His love and grace, sent His Son Jesus Christ to be the propitiation for our sins
25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Jesus Christ, by His death on the cross, shed His blood to satisfy God’s wrath and justice, and to reconcile us to God (Rom. 5:9-10
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,
16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,
20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled
22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—
We receive the benefits of Christ’s propitiation by faith in His blood (Rom. 3:25; Heb. 9:14).

Why do we need Christ’s blood to propitiate God’s wrath?
1. Because of God’s holiness:

God is infinitely pure and separate from sin, and He cannot tolerate any evil in His presence
13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness. Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours A person more righteous than he?
3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

God is perfectly fair and righteous, and He must punish every sin according to His law
7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face.

Why do we need Christ’s blood to propitiate God’s wrath? Because God is Holy and Just and finally....

We are all born in sin and have rebelled against God, and we have no way of appeasing His wrath by ourselves
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.
10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
We have great need and only God can provide to that need.
Now lets move from Necessity of Propitiation that is the need for it...to the provision of propitiation. That is how God is going to handle it.

How did Christ’s blood propitiate God’s wrath? Three ways to answer this question.

Christ took our place and bore our sins on the cross, and He suffered the full penalty of God’s wrath for us
4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),
Not only what Christ our substitute but our sacrifice as well...Christ’s blood propitiates YHWH wrath...

Christ offered Himself as a perfect and spotless sacrifice to God, and He gave His life as a ransom for us
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
Again, how did Christ blood propitiate YHWH wrath.

Christ fulfilled the demands of God’s law and justice, and He appeased God’s wrath and anger against us
3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,
4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,
14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

How do we receive Christ’s blood as our propitiation?
1. By repentance:

We must turn from our sins and acknowledge our need for God’s mercy and forgiveness
3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

We must trust in Christ alone as our Savior and Lord, and rely on His blood as the only ground of our salvation
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

We must follow Christ as our Master and King, and live according to His will and commands
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

Conclusion:
Propitiation is a wonderful word that reveals the greatness of God’s love and the glory of Christ’s work.Through Christ’s blood, we have peace with God, forgiveness of sins, access to His presence, adoption into His family, and hope of eternal life.Let us praise God for His indescribable gift, and let us proclaim the message of propitiation to a lost and dying world.
