Proverbs 8:12-21

Proverbs 8:12–21 LSB
“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And I find knowledge and discretion. “The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the mouth of perverted words, I hate. “Counsel is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, might is mine. “By me kings reign, And rulers mark out righteousness. “By me princes rule, and nobles, All who judge rightly. “I love those who love me; And those who earnestly seek me will find me. “Riches and glory are with me, Enduring wealth and righteousness. “My fruit is better than fine gold, even pure gold, And my produce better than choice silver. “I walk in the path of righteousness, In the midst of the pathways of justice, To give those who love me an inheritance of wealth, That I may fill their treasuries.

I, Wisdom,

In the original languages this is the form of speech, the idea conveyed is that we are able to determine who is wise through the vocabulary that they use. Listening to the words with which the individual chooses to use to convey their knowledge or the lack their of, specifically in the various subjects.

Prudence -

Is the calculation of a risk. This calculation is based on evidence and patterns of human behavior, situational and circumstantial evidence. History and research of that historical data form several different sources. Comparing and contrasting several different viewpoints before coming to a final conclusion.

Knowledge and discretion-

These are one word in the Hebrew and Aramaic. This word means to obtain knowledge and then filter it through. As we listen to the various “news” or opinions of our day, we then filter that information through the “lens” or perspective of our worldview. If our worldview is based on the Bible, we take the information obtained and filter it through the passages of Scriptures. If our worldview is based on experience, science, emotions, social status, etc., we will filter this information through that lens. WWJD is a worldview, and many individuals filtered their decisions through that lens, before making a decision.

Fear of Yahweh -

Yahweh is the Father, different than the Son, and Holy Ghost. Yahweh is the ultimate judge of the world. Yahweh determines what is Good and Evil. Jesus is (God in the flesh); incarnate. Jesus is the Christ, the mediator, the Son of God standing between Yahweh and His wrath. Those who have faith in Jesus, have Jesus standing before Yahweh (First Commandment). Without Jesus, there is no one standing between you and Yahweh.

Pride and arrogance

Although they are synonymous they are different. The word “esteem” is rooted in pride, it is the unwarranted or unjustified belief in the superiority of self. It is the way an individual thinks or has a perspective of one’s own self. Arrogance is the application of pride, overbearing. To be arrogant is to act with the thought that “you” can do a better job than someone else, including God.

Perverted words

Means to redefine the words that God has already defined. Sin, holiness, justice, love, hate, faith, grace, mercy, wrath, etc. Perverted words also means to give credit to someone or something by which credit is not deserved, to blame, to hold responsible or accountable someone or something falsely. To accuse by twisting the intention of, or revising a source of authority.

Counsel and sound wisdom -

This is to seek, search, and study differing viewpoints. It is to understand the arguments for and against a specific subject through hearing and reading. Then determining the “greater” or more “logical and rational” explanation.

Understanding -

The compression of nature, character, to accept conditions and stipulations, to be in agreement with.

Produce -

The “fruit” of what has been planted or grown. Wisdom produces the best of fruit, through the work of “waiting, weeding, and watering.

In the midst -

The middle, the “heart” of the issue and the judgment that occurs because of the incident.

Application

Wisdom yells, screams, and calls out in the middle of the street proclaiming these virtues. Those who practice and apply these virtues tend to have easier, happier, and healthier lives. Let us heed to the words that have spoken to live a life of virtue.
