READ John 5: 25-30
25 times – “truly, truly”
First mention in John by Jesus of the resurrection – it obviously becomes a central theme to His ministry – and 1 Cor. 15 all about the resurrection
Life in Himself = eternal existence, another claim of deity:
God’s life came from no one – I AM

Jesus and the Resurrection(s)

1) Hearing Voices

Not the "in your head” type
The voices you WANT to hear
Voice of Jesus – SHOUT
Voice of the archangel - 1 Thess 4
Jesus, at the Judgment seat of Christ – 2 Cor 5:10
2 Corinthians 5:10 NASB95
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
MUST Hear the Shepherd’s voice NOW, to hear those then. John 10 - He sheep hear His voice
The voice you do NOT want to hear
“Depart from Me, I never knew you.” Matt 7:23
Matthew 7:23 NASB95
“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
Then - GWT judgment (see NAC commentary)
Revelation 20:12 NASB95
And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
Revelation 20:13 NASB95
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.
Believers will be physically resurrected - 1 Thess 4, 2 Thess 1 texts
Rejecters will be physically resurrected - Rev. 20:12-13 text
Jesus, with His own resurrection, shows the way, that because of His resurrection, ours will follow

2) Making Choices

The choice you need to make
EXPLAIN - The basis of salvation, doing good or doing bad, driven by what’s in the heart
Judged according to deeds = Judged according to the heart, the soul that has trusted or rejected Jesus - the deeds/motivations show Who or what you follow
The life of the believer shows
The life of the rejecter shows
Don’t forget, it’s not about works getting there - See Eph 2:8-9
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
The works, the life you live for Christ, are the deeds spoken of
The person who never trusts Christ CANNOT do good works, as Scripture defines them

3) The Focus of Rejoicing

Need “proof?” – V. 30 – 30-word sentence, Jesus refers to self (“I”, “ME”) 8 times; 8 times in 34 words (30 in the Greek)
What He says, goes
He’ll defend Himself further (next time, following verses)
He again reminds of being Judge
John 12:48 NASB95
“He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.
GWT - Rev. 20:13-14
Jesus holds the power of life, and the authority to judge
“but…” – yeah, there are no “buts”
Jesus, fully human, is qualified to judge humans
Jesus, fully God, is qualified to just eternal spiritual matters
POINT – Our spiritual lives are shown in the physical lives lived now
As for the resurrection
The grave is empty
Jesus knows it – He was there
John knew it – HE SAW
Hell knows it
Jesus alive, means you can be, too
Closing – definitions and application
Faith – Heb 11:1 – trust without seeing, experiencing (crossing a bridge, standing on a chair, etc.)
Hope – confident expectation – no hint of uncertainty
Love – selfless action
This is a message I needed – the dark days in which we live
I trust, by faith, that Jesus did what He said He did, what the Bible says about being forgiven. My faith has found a resting place, by faith, all those people in Scripture who had faith in God, are with Him now – my faith says the same about me
I hope, confidently expect to be resurrected into a glorious body to be with Jesus, forever
I love now, because He loved then, now, and forever. 1 Cor. 13:13 – greatest of these is love
Companies invest heavily to invoke brand trust, loyalty.
Jesus invested everything, His very life, to invoke trust and loyalty.
Trust Him, and live a live that shows loyalty to Him
How about we trust Jesus, what He did, what He does, and what he told us He will do. Trust that.
