Navigation by Instruments
Once a year as a flight medic on board a flight crew we would have to pass an annual flight exam…
during this exam there were numerous staged malfunctions we had to overcome this was to ready us for an actual in flight situation. One of those was inclement weather in which we had to trust our instruments to help us navigate to safe landing.
More than instruments we have a voice in our ears that takes over and guides the way as we navigate.
In one particular flight in Afghanistan we encountered not just bad weather but it happened in the middle of the night (Afghanistan Dark) As we lost sight of the ground our fleer caught glimpse of the terrain suddenly we heard the alarm in our ears and the robotic sound of the system “rising terrain” As I observed we pierced the clouds suddenly I could see what looked like the silhouette of a mountain as steadily as I could I alerted the pilot on controls “rising terrain in sight 9 o’ clock level 200 out climb climb climb
Our return home we were “blind” at moments it would feel like we were flying straight and look at the instruments would tell us we were banking other times it felt like we were flying upside down the instruments told us we were level… On approach to our return we made contact with tower and they proceeded to guide us home.
Dustoff 202 we are tracking you and will guide you home. there is a storm cell in front of you, Dustoff 202 we will redirect you from your flight plan stay on glidepath and we will see you soon.
1. Climb to 1000 ft
course corrections in minimal degrees
2. Off of glide path correct to heading
3. Begin decent
As we suddenly pierced the clouds once more the lights from our landing zone could be made out but the fog and dust made it near impossible to see. Speed change torque change, direction change, suddenly as soft as possible our wheels came into contact with land.
Our walk into the promise is much the same. We cannot trust what everything around us is telling us instead we will have to trust the voice of the Holy Spirit to bring us home.

In our walk into the promise we must listen to the voice of the Lord.

Joshua 3:1–3 ESV
Then Joshua rose early in the morning and they set out from Shittim. And they came to the Jordan, he and all the people of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over. At the end of three days the officers went through the camp and commanded the people, “As soon as you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place and follow it.
Careful to wait on the voice before moving
Receive a command on how to advance
Not placing the their eyes on Joshua (even when the Lord has promised to make him great) Their eyes are on the presence of the Lord.

Do Not Get Ahead of the Lord

Joshua 3:4 ESV
Yet there shall be a distance between you and it, about 2,000 cubits in length. Do not come near it, in order that you may know the way you shall go, for you have not passed this way before.”
Commanded to hold their position
Too far ahead too far behind
Just right distance
Given direction in the waiting
You do not know this way ( you may have been here before but you have not crossed this way before
Is 58 my thoughts are not your thoughts…your ways are not my ways…my ways are higher..
Trust in the voice of the Holy Spirit found in His Presence.

Watch Your Conduct

Joshua 3:5 ESV
Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”
Set yourself apart
Conduct yourself as a child of God ( 1 Pet 1:15 He who called you is holy you must be Holy)
Wonders… He will accomplish the impossible before you (Be Holy)
you have to set yourself apart of you desire to see His hand at work

Stand still and wait on the Lord

Joshua 3:8–9 ESV
And as for you, command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’ ” And Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God.”
The Jordan at this time was overflowing its banks
Rushing waters that would topple anyone over
50-200 ft deep
one of the fastest flowing rivers in the world
With the rushing depths the command sit still
In midst of it all “Come sit and Listen”
The call or command is not to trust in our understanding or even in what we can do we must be guided by His presence.
His ways are greater than our ways, His ways are not our ways, as we see the promise ahead of us, we may have been here before and each time we've been here we have found ways to try in our own way to make it work… as we approach the promise it is necessary to trust the sound of the voice guiding us bringing course corrections He will lead us home.
