Only those Jesus appointed.
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also,
“seventy” -
Like the number twelve, the number seventy is connected with Israel.
Seventy members of Jacob’s family went down into Egypt to join Joseph (Gen. 46:27).
There were seventy elders who represented the nation of Israel (Exod. 24:1, 9; Num. 11:25; Ezek. 8:11).
Seventy nations listed in Genesis 10.
Seventy years of captivity in Babylon
Peter having to forgive seventy times seven.
The sending of the seventy was kind of a precursor of the time when the Gospel would go forth throughout all the world.
So the twelve apostles match the twelve patriarchs, and the seventy match the seventy elders.
“appointed” -
2 Timothy 1:11 “Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.”
“appointed” - (1828)
Fixed; set; established; decreed; ordained; constituted; allotted.
Furnished; equipped with things necessary; as, a ship or an army is well appointed.
Three things every God called preacher is appointed to do:
A call to proclaim.
A call to an office.
A call to instruct.
Only the way Jesus directed.
and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place,
“two and two” - legal, established by witnesses.
“every city and place” - no restrictions to just cities and places in Israel.
Only where Jesus was expected.
whither he himself would come.
He appoints and directs us to every city and place for the same reason: He is coming here!

Pray. v.2
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
Every preacher should pray this from day one.
“harvest” - occurs three times in Christ’ ministry:
John 4:35–36 “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”
Matthew 9:38 “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”
Matthew 13:39 “The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.”
Go. v.3
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
We are on enemy territory.
The way of wolves:
Their is an alpha female that leads the pack.
They hunt in groups.
They overtake herds one at a time acting like a playful dog.
Deputation. v.4
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
The missionary must be supported financially from back home.
Peace. vs.5-6
The preacher is to work bringing a message of peace. v.5
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
2 Timothy 2:24 “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,”
The evangelist/missionary/pastor is to preach the gospel of peace.
Striving prevents the mission and message.
He is to be gentle as well as patient.
The preacher is to have discernment about people. v.6
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
There is a gift of discernment.
1 Corinthians 12:10 “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:”
The is a Book that discerns.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
That Book helps grow discernment in those that were not gifted.
Hebrews 5:14 “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
Blend. vs.7-8
The preacher is not there to frolic and politic. v.7
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
The preacher cannot be picky about provisions. v.8
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
Heal. v.9
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Healing comes through salvation for the lost.
Healing comes through Scriptures for the saved.

The Lord’s comparison. Vs.10-12
Publicly announce what happened. v.10
10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
Publicly reject what happened. v.11
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
The Lord reveals the state of that place. V.12
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
The Lord’s judgment. vs.13-16
They will reject the Lord’s miracles. v.13
13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
They will receive the Lord’s judgment. v.15
15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
They will refuse the Lord’s salvation. v.16
16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
