JESUS WAS RESURRECTED
Meaning that Jesus defatead and concord death once and for all
Passage/Scripture:
MARK 16:1 - 8, (ESV)
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.”
CONTEXT:
* The Passover has ended and 3 Women (Mary Magdolene, Mary the Mother of James ((Jesus’ Mother)), and Salome) were headed to anoint Jesus..
* 3 days had passed since the crucifixion and death of Jesus and it was a typical practice to anoint the dead because there was an odder from the dead body that was caused from decay...
* So these 3 women get up early in the morning (most likely Sunday) and are going to the tomb of Jesus to anoint him...
The Tomb of Jesus is guarded and sealed: Matthew 27: 62 - 66: (ESV), and the women were discussing amongest themselves who was going to move away the stone?
This stone was heavy, not easily moved, and would require great assistance and much strength…
Meaning that the women were worried about being able to move it bc of its size and weight…
But, when the women arrived, the stone was already moved… the entrance to the tomb was open…
POINT #1) GOD CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLE
When I look back and read my Bible from the beginning in Genesis - to the end - Revelation… I see a God who can do what I think can not be done…
For Example:
God uses simply speaks and life exists… With a word he brings for the world… Out of nothing God creates everything...
When God sees that it is not good for man to be alone he creates a woman from the rib Adam...
God speaking to Moses from a burning bush and the bush is never consumed by fire… or in a heap of ashes...
4. God parting the Red Sea for Israelites to escape the Egyptians…
5. God providing Manna/food from heaven for the Israelites...
6. In Joshua 10:12-14, we see God stop the Sun and the Moon until the nation of Isreal took vengance upon their enemies
7. In 1 Kings 17 we see God using the prophet Elijah to raise a Widows Son from the Dead
8. John 2:1 - 11 we see water turned into wine…
9. In Matthew 8 & 9 we see a Lepar and Paralytic completely restored and healed…
10. Matthew 12 a person possessed by a Demon is healed
11. We see God opening the eyes of blind men
12. God Feeding people by thousands in Matthew 15
13. John 11 we see Lazuras raised from the dead
14. Mark 16 we see Jesus Christ raised from the dead…
15. Transform and save the lives of sinners like you and me
I do not know what comes to your mind when you think of God… I do not know what Kind of box you place him in your head… I am not sure how you view God or how you construct him in your mind…
But this I do know, nothing is impossible when God is involved… God is an expert at working when you least expect it… when you think there is no hope… when you are the point of giving up… God steps in and shows he has never given up… that he is always faithful, that he is all powerful, that he is compassionate, that he is loving, that he is good, that he is in control… and that he has a plan…
Here is another example of this...
Genesis 18:14 ESV,
“Is anything too hard[a] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Sarah was married to Abraham well-advanced in years, and God sees that Sarah would doubt that she could have a child at her advanced age… and the question asked her is rhetoric… meaning… that it did require a response bc the answer is obvious… GOD CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLE!
Question to consider: Have you stopped believing that God can do the Impossibe in your own life? Are there areas in your life that you feel like God is not working, has not worked, and will not work in?
Is there sin in your life that you have given up on trying to kill and defeat bc you keep running to it again and again? Are their people in your life that you have given up on, thinking that they are too far gone, Surely God can not save them?
Have you given up on yourself and think, Surely God can not save a sinner like me… he knows what I have done… He knows what I regret and what I wish I could take back… I am too far gone for God to save…
Have you stopped believing that GOD CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLE?
POINT #2) JESUS DEFEATED DEATH AND WAS RESURRECTED
Mark 16:6, “And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has RISEN; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.”
RISEN = to enter into or to be in a state of life as a result of being raised
Meaning that Jesus was truly without life… He was dead in the tomb… yet he was raised to life and entered into a state of life...
The Resurection is crucial to are faith in Jesus Christ… it a key pillar of our faith… it something we look to, cling to, and have hope in…
The death of Jesus was the necessary sacrifice for our sins… But, the resurection is our victory…
For if Jesus did not rise from the dead then we would have victory over death… we would not be able to say, Oh death where is your sting?
1 Corinthians 15:55 - 57;
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The resurrection allows us to celebrate our great savior and victory of death and sin in this life… and allows us to look forward to death because we know it is not our end… rather, because Jesus was resurected, a new beginning awaits us in heaven!
A Question that you may be thinking about is: How does the resurrection affect you, how should it mold and shape your persepctive of Jesus Christ and how you should go about living your life?
POINT #3) THE RESURECTION GIVES YOU HOPE…
A.) The resurrection allows you to look forward to the next life, to set your eyes on the Kingdom of Heaven, and awaits you after death…
So as you live this life you aim to proclaim the name of Jesus and share him with friends and family bc you know the joy of looking forward to heaven and seeing your heavenly Father after this life and you want others to share in that same experience
It helps you to not cling to the things of this world that do not last and cling to Jesus because he is everlasting
Meaning that you do not live your life for a career, grade, relationship, or sport bc you know that the things of this world decay, fall apart, rust, and do not last… but because of the resurrection of Jesus, you look to eternity with God, where decay and rust do not exist…
B.) The resurretion provides you with a new hope in death…
Meaning that when I die, when life is taken from me here on earth, I have hope… I do not have to fear what comes next… I do not have to live a life in the unknown… rather, I am fully aware of where I am headed… Which is home with God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son…
Meaning that one day when my Father leaves this earth and dies I will mourn, cry, be sad, wish he did not have to go, but will be able to have a hope and joy bc I know that he belives in Jesus Christ and the resurrection and is experiencing the Kindgom of heaven… In the midst of sorrow I can sing praises to the LORD bc death is no longer the end… it is simply the beginning…
Meaning that when my mother is no longer with me here on this earth… I can celebrate with great confidence, hope, and joy bc I know it is not her end… rather it is her beginning…
Meaning that when my Son who will be born around 2/8/24 will know that when I leavea this earth and die… it is only just the beginning for me… that I will be with my heavenly father bc Jesus gives us hope through his resurrection!
Question: Have you given much thought about the Resurrection? Have you realized that the resurrection is essential to the Christian faith? Does it impact you? does it change how you live your life?
Do you experience the hope and joy that I am talking about? That is only found in Jesus Christ and His resurrection?
Does death still have a sting for you? Do you fear death? Or have you come to a place where you can say, there is victory in the Resurrection of Jesus and I know that death is simply the beginning of a new life with Jesus Christ in heaven?
