What do I believe God wants us to know? He is emet loyally faithful
Why? It brings hope, truth, shalom
What I believe God wants us to do? Put our emet in Him
Why? It brings us hope, truth, shalom
ME/WE
There is a question we ask in this room and online when we make a major purchase such as buying a house or a car.
It is a similar question that we ask when get into a relationship with someone especially a marriage relationship…we want to know if this person is going to be..
It is the same question we ask others with a job or when a contract is draw up with a company when we want work done on our house or car.
What is the question?
Will the house or car or person be emet???
What is that? We are hoping in and believing in that the thing or person. Will they be loyally faithful, trustworthy, reliable
Is this not what we want from the car we buy?
We want the car we buy to last awhile and not break down on us…it is lemon....if it is not emet it cause hardache, anxiety and pain…sometimes there is nothing worse than a vehicle not exuding emet
We want our relationship with someone to have emet
Is this not what we are pledgeing at the altar…I will emet you for better or worse, in sickness and in health
Emet is a covenantal relationship
TENSION
This is a question we not only ask of a car or a house or a personal relatioship....this is a question we ask of God
God will you be emet to me? Be faithfully loyal to me
When do we often ask this question?
When we have not been emet towards God…God I have not been 100% faithfully loyal to you…will you be emet towards me
Or you are like me and believe He will be emet towards me when I am more emet towards Him…I need to earn my emet from God..
2. We ask this question when our backs are up against the wall…when we are in a hard situation....some harder than others....and we ask God will you be emet towards us???
Will you deliver us?
Sometimes, not always, it is our lack of emet of not following God’s ways that leads us to a bad situation…We are reaping what we are sowing...Gal 6:7-8
Galatians 6:7–8 ESV
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
We
anybody been here?
What does word say?
Does God say “I will only be emet if they are emet?”
Or Does God say “figure it out?”
No
2 Timothy 2:13 ESV
if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
God says my faithfulness is not dependent upon our faithfulness
Not only that it is apart of His character…that the first time God speaks about His character one of the thing He says is He is emet
Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
GOD DOESN’T JUST SAY IT....I AM EMET....HE SHOWS IT BY LEADING US AND ISRAEL OUT OF EGYPT....
ISRAEL IS IN A PHYSICAL AND SPIRUTAUL EGYPT OF SLAVERY…AND A SPIRITUAL…THEY ARE IN CAPTIVITY
OURS IS A SPIRITUAL EGYPT OF SIN, DEATH, AND SHAME…OUR LACK OF EMET HAS BROUGHT DEATH
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
WHY ARE WE IN EGPTY BECAUSE OF OUR SIN
WHY IS ISRAEL AND EGPTY BECAUSE OF THEIR SIN
BUT GOD SAYS THOUGH THEY ARE NOT FAITHFUL I AM GOING TO BE FAITHFUL TO FULFILL MY PROMISES AND MY HEART FOR MY PEOPLE
WHAT DOES GOD DO?
HE RAISES UP A RIGHTEOUS REDEEMER IN MOSES TO DELIVER THE NATION OF ISRAEL OF SLAVERY AND BONDAGE
LEADS THEM OUT
IN A SIMIALAR WAY GOD SENDS A RIGHTEOUS REDEEMER IN JESUS, FROM EARTH, TO BECOME THE SACRIFICAL LAMB WHO TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD
HOW DO RESPOND…DANCING?
WE WERE SLAVES BUT NOW FREE
Psalm 51:12 ESV
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
THEN WHAT HAPPENS RIGHT AFTER THE SALVATION???
OUR ENEMIES OF THE DEVIL, THE WORLD, AND OUR FLESH…SAY HOLD ON....I CANNOT LET YOU GO THAT FREELY
But their rejoicing turns to fears because they are taken to the sea, YHWH is going to kill us….
Exodus 14:1–14 ESV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea. For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, ‘They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’ And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord.” And they did so. When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him, and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out defiantly. The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
WAIT WAIT GOD....WHAT ARE YOU DOING???
I THOUGHT IT WOULD ALWAYS BE EASY FROM NOW ON OUT TO ENTER THE PROMISE LAND
GOD I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE STRESS FREE???
WE ARE IN THE ALREAD AND NOT YET
What does God do?
GOD SPLITS THE SEA AND DEFEATS OUR ENEMIES
NOT ONLY THAT HE SHOWS EGYPT WHO IS GOD
God splits the sea FOR ISRAEL TO MARCH THROUGH AND AS THE EGYPTIANS COME GOD CLOSES THE SEA
n Egyptian mythology, the lake or field of reeds was the underworld where the soul of the dead was purified before ascending into heaven. The soul was said to pass over the underworld sea of reeds... Well, isn’t that interesting. For an Egyptian acquainted with these texts, this lake (I’ll read it again) was the place where “the soul of the dead was purified before ascending into heaven” (kind of like a purgatory). “The soul was said to pass over the underworld sea of reeds...” ... much as the historical Passover of Israel in the Reed Sea events. Guess what, folks? If you’re an Egyptian, and you’re either witnessing the events or if you’re a Hebrew familiar with this and you’re reading about it later on in Exodus 15... This is not purgatory. Egyptians aren’t going anywhere. They’re 35:00 dead. They are in the realm of the dead for keeps because it’s the God of Israel who has command over this. He sets the terms. This would have really struck fear into an Egyptian. And the biblical writer (if indeed Wifall is correct, that we have these connections back into Egyptian thinking) knows exactly what he’s doing. If you’re someone who’s familiar with this belief, either because you’re an Egyptian or you know about the Egyptians, you’re going to know that this is a theological statement. “You’re not going anywhere, buddy.” [laughs] “You are in the underworld. This isn’t just a temporary thing that you’re going to get out of later. You’re not getting out of anywhere. You’re locked up.” Back to Wifall
IT IS A STATEMENT TO EGYPT AND TO ALL OF ISRAEL THE EGYTPIAN GOD’S ARE NOT gods
Then God parts the see and defeats our ENEMIES!!!
Has God not done this in your life?
GOD HAS BEEN EMET TO YOUR IN A VERY DIFFICULT TIME
WHOA!!!
PRAISE GOD
How did the people write a respond…FIRST PRAISE SONG
Exodus 15:1–21 ESV
Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name. “Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries; you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble. At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea. The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’ You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters. “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them. “You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. The peoples have heard; they tremble; pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia. Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; trembling seizes the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm, they are still as a stone, till your people, O Lord, pass by, till the people pass by whom you have purchased. You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. The Lord will reign forever and ever.” For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”
Is this not like us??
Praise God!
He parted the sea
SING A NEW SONG
Psalm 96:1 ESV
Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!
But then what happens? BUT wait God we have a problem
RIGHT AFTER THE SINGING AND PRAISING GOD FOR DELIVERANCE
Exodus 15:22–25 ESV
Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,
God is emet again
HOW LONG DOES THIS LAST? NOT VERY LONG
GOD WE ARE HUNGRY!
WERE’S THE FOOD!
ANOTHER PROBLEM
WE NEED TO GO BACK TO EGYPT
Exodus 16:2–4 ESV
And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
GOD IS EMET AND PROVIDES AGAIN
THIS PATTERN CONTINUES OVER AND OVER FOR THE NATION OF ISRAEL AND US
2 Timothy 2:13 ESV
if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
HOW MANY TIMES HAS THAT BEEN TRUE IN OUR LIFE…WE HAVE BEEN FAITHLESS AND HE HAS BEEN FAITHFUL
GOD SAYS TO THOSE WHO ARE HIS CHILDREN…KEY POINT…TO THOSE WHO GIVE THEIR ALLIGENCE TO GOD…I AM GOING TO BE FAITHFUL TO YOU, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT FAITHFUL TO ME
TRUST ME
THAT I WORK ALL THINGS FOR GOD
Proverbs 3:1–6 ESV
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
End with
Matthew 7:24–27 ESV
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
