Romans 3:24-31, Habakkuk 2
Paul reveals the Old Testament truth that the opposite of faith is pride.

Faith excludes pride (24-27)

Faith in the righteousness of Christ
Humility based on the wretchedness of all mankind fallen in sin (Romans 3:10-20)
Humility based on the forbearance of God towards sinful man (25)
Pride is rejected by the law of faith
If we have faith in Christ for salvation then there is no place for boasting or pride
The Law of Faith excludes all pride
Moses taught the law of faith as he concluded the giving of the laws
Deuteronomy 30:11-14 quoted by Paul in Romans 10 as the key to righteousness by faith
Pride says- I will go up, I will go over!
Humility says- God has brought his word near us; in our mouth and in our heart that we may do it
If faith excludes pride than it opens the door for all people to humble themselves and come to Christ for salvation and righteousness!

Faith includes all (28-30)

Salvation comes without the deeds of the law
This means that salvation does not come to the Jews only or else they could boast in their heritage and nation
God saves people no matter where they come from as long as they come by faith
He is one God over all people
He is the one Creator of heaven and earth and all that reside in them
He is the one Savior who is able to justify any sinner no matter how sinful and far removed they may have been
Even Paul, the chief of sinners and the most righteous in the law was brought to salvation by faith
There is no one too righteous or too sinful that God cannot reach
If faith includes all people then should we remove the law all together? No, faith establishes the law as we come humbly to Christ for salvation and live in his power and righteousness for the glory of God.

Faith establishes the law (31)

The law has not been made void
The law pointed us to our desperate need of a savior to rescue us from our sin and failure
The law continues to teach and instruct us, even as believers, that we are still in need of God’s work in our daily lives
By faith, we show the law and the law-maker are true and right
When we humble ourselves under the law in repentance we show forth the righteousness of Christ
We establish God has the great judge in our life and reveal that our righteousness is worthless
Habakkuk 2 The pride of Israel
vs 4 and 5. The uplifted soul is opposite the just who live by faith
Woe to those who are lifted up
Worldly riches (6-8) “I can take whatever I want”
Worldly securities (9-11) “I can take care of myself”
Worldly judgments (12-14) “I decide what is right and wrong”
Worldly pleasures (15-17) “I can do whatever I want”
Worldly religions (18-19) “I can make my own god”
vs. 20 But the Lord is in his holy temple
Let all the earth keep silence before him
