Titus 1:10–2:12 (KJV)
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Much of tonight will be making sure we understand the words that should describe how our lives should show that we know and believe the Gospel.

Let’s talk about evangelism

Philippians 2:15 “15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
The God-given task of reaching the lost, it all starts with the kind of people we are - not the technique.
It is our godliness in the midst of crooked, perverse people that lay the platform on which we hold fast the Word of life.
Here in Titus we have a contrast.
Titus 1:16 “16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”
Titus 2:1 “1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:”
The point of this passage is evangelistic.
Titus 2:5 “5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Titus 2:8 “8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
Titus 2:10 “10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.”
Salvation has changed the way we live our lives. Titus 2:14 “14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”

Possible to know the truth but not be obeying it.

True transformation comes through being effectual doers of the word you know, trust, and believe. James 1:22–24 “22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.”
Memorizing verses is good, obeying them will change your life. They are are also evidence of a life that has been changed.

In the Bible we see proclamation and we see personal involvement in the lives of others.

The New Testament plan for evangelism.  There is no plan shown for share Jesus with large groups outside of proclamation (Pentecost)
Though I do not preach on street I did in college and respect that some still do.
In the NT is only a plan given for how to capture the attention of individuals.
God wants a holy people.  That is the primary New Testament evangelistic strategy.
We need to leave lives with honest conversations. 1 Peter 2:12 “12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
9 out of people come to Christ, church, or get involved in a Bible study because of personal invitation.

Paul will break down the ways in which these particular groups in the body of Christ are to live as redeemed men and women of God.

Older Men
Older Women
Younger Women
Younger Men
Children / those learning how to become young men and young women
Employees

And what we will see regarding these varying age groups is, the Gospel has no respect of persons.

The Gospel demands a life response regardless of age or social status.
This morning we looked at aged men and women, tonight young men and women

Responsibility to be taught

Titus 2:4 “4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,”
He moves the discussion from public edification from the pulpit to private training by means of discipleship.
The responsibility of teaching the younger women is to be accomplished by the older women.
Young people have the tendency to assume that we know everything.
And when it comes down to discipleship it requires that we be teachable.
There is an old African Proverb that says: “ The youth can walk faster, but the elder knows the road.”

Advice to Young Women

Titus 2:4–5 “4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Teach to be sober—
The aged women are to train by discipline the young women to think sanely and soundly.
This means the women of our church need to know the Bible. The pastor is not the only one required to teach sound doctrine. Continue studying. VBI, Veritas, ABCE, getting together with friends for in-depth study
Left without godly direction, they can be easily deceived and readily endangered.
To love their husbands—
Young women need to be taught how to affectionately love their husbands.
A woman’s human priority is her husband, and she must be taught how to love him properly.
Marriage does not automatically make one a person of selflessness and right priority. Such qualities must be learned.
To love their children—
Loving one’s husband and one’s children encompasses the priority of a young wife’s life.
Her desires, activities, and schedule should reflect such noble priorities.
Never should her life be characterized as neglectful of these two essentials.
One of the more challenging verses in Scripture for me to understand. 1 Timothy 2:14–15 “14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”
Four options are often given. (Bible Knowledge Commentary)
preserved (physically) through the difficult and dangerous process of childbirth; - doesn’t fit because people who don’t continue in faith have safe deliveries as well
preserved from the loss of a meaningful role in the family;
saved through the ultimate childbirth of Jesus Christ the Savior (an indirect reference to Gen. 3:15)
kept from the corruption of society by being at home raising children.
A woman will find her greatest satisfaction and meaning in life, not in seeking the male role, but in fulfilling God’s design for her as wife and mother with all “faith, love, and holiness with propriety
Discreet—Self-controlled in one’s thinking and passions.
Social media brings many challenges to this. It is as if we can walk room to room with different topics and we are allowed to yell out whatever we think then leave if we want.
Chaste—Purity is an essential character quality for all Christians including young women.
Purity is an inner quality (James 3:17) which manifests itself in outer behavior (1 Peter 3:2). James 3:17 “17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” 1 Peter 3:2 “2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.”
Recognizing this truth, we must think on pure things (Phil. 4:8) in order that we might manifest pure living (1 John 3:3). 1 John 3:3 “3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
Modesty: “an inner attitude of the heart motivated by a love for God that seeks His glory through purity and humility; it often reveals itself in words, actions, expressions, and clothes”
Immodesty: “an attitude of the heart that expresses itself with inappropriate words, actions, expressions and/or clothes that are flirtatious, manipulative, revealing, or suggestive of sensuality or pride”
Keepers at home—one who guards home!
By implication, the young Christian wife is one who is domestically inclined.
Making home a priority provides an effective means by which to avoid unwise time-wasting, gossiping, busybodying, etc. 1 Timothy 5:13 “13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.”
Good—general term connoting that which is beneficial.
The Christ-honoring life is the life that is beneficial not only to the Lord, but also to oneself and others.
Obedient to their own husbands—to be in joyful, subjection.
Young women need to be taught to recognize and operate within the Biblical structure of the home.
Husbands bear the governmental rule of the home and, as such, bear the greater accountability. James 3:1 “1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.”

Advice to Young Men

Titus 2:6–8 “6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. 7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
Sober minded—.
This cannot be overemphasized: God’s peculiar people are those who take the Christian life seriously.
Advice starts and ends with be sober minded.
Keep in mind that Titus himself was a young man.
Pattern— literally, something stamped; as an impression made by a die (used to describe the prints of the nails in the hands of the Lord—John 20:25).
By application, the term applied to an example of one to be followed. Philippians 3:17 “17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.”
In 1 Tim. 4:12—Paul insisted that Timothy be an example to the church--in spite of his youth—in the areas of word, conversation, charity, spirit, faith, and purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 “12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
In all things
He simply does not have the luxury to pick and choose the times of his influence.
He must assume that he is being constantly watched (of course he already is by God!), and he must remember that people are much more likely to embrace what he does than what he says.
Shewing thyself a pattern of good works—
The mentor’s life is on display and should showcase a life of Biblical priority.
His behavior should betray a life given to doing (not merely knowing) the things God has called for him to do.
Don’t forget, Jesus died for us that we might be his peculiar people, zealous of good works (v. 14). We were saved in order that we might accomplish those works which God has ordained that we accomplish.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good
Women should be known for good works rather than outward apparel (1 Tim. 2:9-10).
The widows a church supports should be noted for their good works (1 Tim. 5:9-10).
Pastors are to be noted for their good works, some of which will be know on this side of heaven, and some on the other (1 Tim. 5:24-25).
Those who are rich in this world are to understand that true wealth involves not dollar signs but good works (1 Tim. 6:17-19).
So important is this topic of good works that Paul comes back to it twice in his conclusion to this epistle:
the first time as an admonishment to Titus and those with him (3:8)
a reminder to himself and those with him. Titus 3:14 “14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.”
This should be a place where we provoke one another to good works. Hebrews 10:24 “24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:”

Conclusion

Lord willing, we will look at how the grace of God should be lived out in our lives at our work at another time.
Tonight we are given plenty to reflect on.
Let’s make two set of decisions tonight.
Ask that the Holy Spirit show you in your life where the Gospel is not being shown.
Consider how you can help provoke others to good works.
We have program for entry level believers and though who want advanced discipleship. Truth is most of us live in the messy middle. We need the ministry of the Word in our lives.
Not just the Word as preached from the pulpit.
We need to be yielding to the Word daily as we read it for ourselves and hear it from others provoking us to good works.
