Ephesians 4:20–24 (ESV) — 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

I. A LOVING SACRIFICE

Ephesians 5:25 (ESV) — 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Why did he give himself up for the church? That he might sanctify the church.
Ephesians 5:26 (ESV) - 26
Ephesians 5:26 ESV
26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
Titus 3:5 (ESV) — 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
Titus 3:5 ESV

Ephesians 1:3–6 (ESV) — 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1:3–6 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
“…in Christ we are given a new history, identity, and destiny. But this has radical, far-reaching implications for our present lives. God not only works for us, but in us. He not only “counts us as holy, he purposes to make us holy—by calling us to holiness and by applying the gospel to our hearts to produce holiness within us. ”[1]

II. HOW WE MOVE TOWARD HOLINESS

Ephesians 4:20–24 ESV
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
What are some application steps?
We must acknowledge that if we are in Christ then we learned Christ.
Paul’s language here is a bit unusual. Normally, one learns a particular content (doctrine, rules, attributes) or behavior (love, respect, do good), not a person (Col. 2:6–7). O’Brien suggests that the idea of learning Christ “means welcoming him as a living person and being shaped by his teaching,” with the result of “submitting to his rule of righteousness and responding to his summons to standards and values completely different from what they have known.”[2]
What are components of learning Christ?
Ephesians 4:21 (ESV) — 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus…
Ephesians 4:21 ESV
21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Learning Christ is tied hearing about him and being taught in him, and the truth is in Jesus.
What were we taught?
To put off your old self. (Our life before Christ.)
To be renewed in the spirit of your minds.
To put on the new self. (The new creation. Life in Christ)
