Preaching

1 Timothy 4:1–4 KJV 1900
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

Methods of Preaching

Topical

Based on how the pastor or “speaker” judges the need of the church.
In a book on homiletics, an evangelist explains how to choose what to preach. The first step he asks is “What is the occasion?” then “What are the objectives?” then “What are the the observations?” then “What is the overflow (results)?”
While this kind of thinking can be very helpful on special days such as Christmas, Easter, Weddings, and Funerals. It will be hard for the church to hear the whole counsel of God’s Word solely using this method. Due to the fact that the pastor or preacher cannot truly know the hearts of every member.

Expository

To be fair, some topical messages can be Expository.
“expositional preaching is preaching that takes for the point of a sermon the point of a particular passage of Scripture.” - Dever, Mark. Nine Marks of a Healthy Church (3rd Edition) (9Marks) . Crossway. Kindle Edition.
When Ezra stood on the pulpit of wood in Ezra 8 and exposited the law to the nation of Israel, he went from the beginning, Genesis and went through Deuteronomy, all the while helping the nation understand the point of Scripture.
We see both of these used throughout the New Testament. Jesus used topical while answering critics including the Devil.
Matthew 4:4 KJV 1900
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
He also used Expository in the synagogue during formal preaching time.
Luke 4:18–21 KJV 1900
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
Preaching expository messages is the best way I know to say “I want to lift of Christ.” When I take a book of the Bible and preach through it bringing to the pulpit the point of the passage I am more likely to preach topics I do not want to preach, and less likely to stay on a topic that I love.

The Role of Preaching

It is to be central in our gathered worship of God.
Romans 10:11–17 KJV 1900
For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Preaching brings spiritual life.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV 1900
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
In order to be a Church that truly belongs to God we must hear from God.
God’s Word has brought life from nothing from the beginning of time.
We see the Word bringing dry bones to life in Ezekiel 37.
Much the same, God breathed life into Adam making him a living soul, God breathed the Word of God into existence. And all who hear and believe in Jesus will have new life.
Ephesians 2:5–6 KJV 1900
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Preaching is profitable for the whole church

1 Corinthians 14:26 KJV 1900
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
1 Corinthians 14:26 KJV 1900
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 KJV 1900
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
The preaching of the Word brings life but it also

Sanctifies the believer

Ephesians 5:25–26 KJV 1900
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
1 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV 1900
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
John 17:17 KJV 1900
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
A. W. Tozer predicted the outcome of a church that adjusts the worship style of the church to meet the desires of the congregation rather than maintaining a worship of God during the meetings.
“It is now common practice in most evangelical churches to offer the people, especially the young people a maximum of entertainment and a minimum of serious instruction. It is scarcely possible in most places to get anyone to attend meeting where the only attraction is God. One can only conclude that God’s professed children are bored with Him, for they must be wooed to meeting with a stick of stripped candy in the form of religious movies, games, and refreshments.
This has influenced the whole pattern of church life, and even brought into being a new type of church architecture designed to house the golden calf.”
