Better the ball
Tonight, as we dive into this section of scripture, we will learn what it means to live Godly lives every single day.
A Lot didn’t grow up in a godly home, or have both parents, surely some inhere were abused, neglected
Some in here have had a boss that was horrible to you, a father who hurt you...
We have all been let down by someone, this passage calls us to be different. To be godly. To make a difference in our families, our jobs, our relationships.
Paul gives us practical instruction, proper motivation, and reminders of what we have already learned from chapters 1-3.
We are going to look verse by verse .
Colossians 3:20–21 ESV
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Colossians 3:22 ESV
22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
Colossians 3:23–24 ESV
23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:25 ESV
25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
Colossians 4:1 ESV
1 Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
PRAY
Colossians 3:20–21 ESV
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Learn from all these examples, principles apply to us
Submission to the Lord, love and serve others as he has instructed us
Children
obey your parents in everything
Submit to the God ordained authorities in your life
Not abusive situations, this letter is aimed at Christian families
Trust that their house rules are for your good
living in a messy room is not good for you
How? a clean and organized room feels amazing!
Curfew? to keep you safe, to safeguard you against temptation
homework before tv places learning ahead of liesure as it should be

Pleases the Lord

Mowing the yard, finishing with a diagonal pattern.
Didn’t have to
Pleased my Dad, turns out I got a joy out of working hard myself on top of that.
Pleases the Lord when we
Obey God
Obedience is us choosing to do what he asks us to do for our good and his glory.
submit to our authority because that is what he calls all of us to do, including Father’s
Pleasing “in the Lord” meaning this is how allChristians should live
God has given all of his children moral code to live by
all the law is summed up in Love God with all your heart soul mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.
Pleasing the Lord should be our motivation. Glorifying him should be our motivation.
Pleasing does not mean he loves you more because you did it, in the same way when we sin...
When I sin God disapproves of my actions, he is displease with my sin. It breaks his heart. But Christian, he never looks upon you with contempt, he is not angy with you when you sin. He is not suprised nor is he flustered
Psalm 18:19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
Fathers
Colossians 3:21 ESV
21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Just like v19, loving your wife, men are called to love their children
To provoke would be to cause your child
The word here (the verb erethizō) means, in the lengthy paraphrase of BDAG, “to cause someone to react in a way that suggests acceptance of a challenge.”
REPENT IF
1. If your parenting style is anger, “cause I said so”, physical intimidation, demeaning…DO NOT
Why? That’s not how your heavenly Father operates
2. If you are causing your kids to be discouraged in doing good and obeying the Lord
3. Disciplining out of anger? Repent
Godly discipline’s aim is to correct, not punish
Point them to the treasure that is Christ
Parent with truth, grace, mercy, as unto the Lord

Encourage them to obey godly authority, to follow Christ, to love God and Love others

Colossians 3:22 ESV
22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
Colossians 3:23 ESV
23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
Slavery is still a thing in this world, but different than 2000 years ago
We can still learn because these principles apply to all of us, all had a boss

Fear of Man vs Fear of God

Fear of Man
Eye service, people pleasing
Maybe trying to work as little as possible to just skate by
Doing the work while talking bad about your boss
Fear of man is ultimately a pride problem
wanting to appear a certain way
Setting your agenda ahead of God’s
Fearing the Lord
In reverence, out of respect and admiration for God our Father
Not fear of being
cast out, not fear of
him not loving us
Colossians 3:22 (ESV)
22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

Sincerity means “singleness of mind”

Focus
Mission
Desire
Sincerely working hard, to glorify God with the work of your hands
All of our work, can have purpose and meaning. For the Lord
Obey and work for men, as for the Lord
How we obey authority can make an eternal difference
How we parent can make an eternal difference
How we work can make an eternal difference
Why? effects others

WORK HARD AS FOR THE LORD

WHY?
Glorifies God today
and he will glorify you in eternity
Colossians 3:24 ESV
24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Inheritance
is for sons and daughters
Points to adoption by God the Father through faith in the death and resurrection of Christ
You are not serving some far off God who is too busy for you
you are not serving some God who sees you as less than
you are not serving some God who will take advantage of your hard work
You are willingly serving the Father who
gave his only son to die on a cross to
cancel your record of debt and to
adopt you as his own.
A Father who counts Jesus perfection as
your perfection. A father who gives you
eternal life in his presence not as a servant any longer but as a
co-heir with Christ. A son or daughter of the King.
1 Peter 1:4 ESV
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

In ALL we do, we are Serving the Lord Christ

Jesus never asks us to do anything he did not do first
Jesus humbled himself, left heaven to become a man, submitted to the will of God everyday, was obedient to the point of death on a cross
He had an eternal perspective, looking beyond today, beyond this life
Securing salvation for you if you believe in him
Joy set before him
Serving Jesus is our motivation, because he showed us the way. We owe him everything.

25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

God is holy and just
God must make every wrong right
We must account for our actions
Sin deserves punishment. Sin that you have done, and sin that has been done to you
No partiality. That means
no sin is too little and
no sin is too great to
deserve seperation from God.
that’s the bad news
Good news.
Jesus blood can wash you clean.
No sin is too great and
no sin is too little, it
can be exchanged for Christ’s righteousness and be forgiven.

4 Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

Boss, manager, anyone in here who holds authority over another. Moms and dads, husbands, pastors, everyone...

You Have a Master in Heaven

treat others how he treats you
justly, fairly
with grace and mercy and truth
forgiveness
love is steadfast
Closing

LIVING A GODLY LIFE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Children: obey your parents it pleases the Lord
Fathers, love your kids like your heavenly father loves you
Workers, work hard, for the Lord’s approval
Boss, be just and fair the way God is just and fair with you
To those who say “I don’t have a master” I am not submitted to anyone...
Philippians 2:10–11 ESV
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
No partiality. That means no sin is too little and no sin is too great to deserve seperation from God.
bad news
Good news. Jesus blood can wash you clean. No sin is too great and no sin is too little, it can be exchanged for Christ’s righteousness and be forgiven.
You DO NOT need to pretty yourself up before you come to Jesus.
