Matthew 6:9 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Introduction

What is the lords prayer?
Who is Jesus speaking to ?
Lets look at two key parts of the first part of this famous prayer

Our father

Context: Jesus is speaking primarily to a jewish context where people wouldn’t call God fathers as much.
In the old testament The term father is used 15 times or less and it is generally more comparative then a clear concise
However now Jesus invites believers to call God father
this is incredibly personal
When we pray the God of the universe invites us into a sacred place where he doesn't demand formality but rather calls us to a place of intimacy as a father and child
for those of you who have been around for a while you will probably remember we talked about being coheirs with Christ
Romans 8:15–17 ESV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
When we have accepted christ we have not only become brothers with Christ we have become the very children of God and heirs with christ in the kingdom of God
We can call the name ABBA father which is close to saying dad
and some of us dont have the greatest dad but this kind of relationship is what perfect fatherhood looks like. we call to him and he calls us our own provides comfort and takes pride in calling us his children even when we make mistake.
John 20:17 ESV
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
The reality is that we have the same father is Jesus although we both have earthly fathers we have a father who loves when we call to him
we all share this great father. hence the term Our father
Jesus invites us to call the God of the universe our father. Lets not take this lightly that is why this line is followed up with hallowed be your name

What is Hallowed

Who here has heard the term hallowed be your name before?
Hallowed: is in most translations
some translations use it as “ let your name be holy” or other variations of the same idea
In the greek the word that is used is Hagizo which means to make holy. which is where we get the term sanctification
however Gods is already holy and the author is not saying the hallowed is the names of God we need to treat the name of God Rightly as something that is holy and above all.
We could use it as God please help us realize that you are so holy and so perfect.
God is the perfection of sanctification he is the perfect and we should approach him as perfect
The author is laying it out like this so we begin our prayers by acknowledging God as who he is a holy and perfect God who is worthy of our adoration

How do we pray

First and foremost we recognize who God is
He is a holy God
he is worthy of our praise and prayers
He hears our prayers
he calls us his children! and we can call him father
We need to be aware of how we approach God
He is holy so treat it as such
this is where taking the lords name in vain comes in he is so holy that we would be very cautious as to not use his name in fashion that would bring any dishonour to our king
We start our prayers be recognizing that God is our father, he loves us soooooo much!
and we proceed with adoration for how powerful and wonderful he is
