Parable: A story a or riddle designed to help the hearer understand a concept or situation better,
Jesus’s parables were a source of insight to those who would try to figure out what they meant, and separated them from those who could not be bothered to solve the riddle.
We talked about how the Kingdom of God can grow so long as the church is faithful in spreading the word, we saw How God will judge who all is in its not up to us to decide, we learned about how God treasures us and wants to bring everyone to celebrate with him, but sometimes our pride keeps us from celebrating - and how Jesus warned the pharisees that they are probably going to miss out.
In matthew 21: we see a similar theme but this time it is with the Priests and the teachers of the law.
For context Jesus is in the temple, and the priests want to kick him out so they start questioning where his authority comes from, in reply jesus gives them a riddle:

23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

With the priests silenced, Jesus begins to teach the priests, and his parables are not very kind to them.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

The priests - who previously questioned John the Baptist, refused to recognize the truth of Johns words, and by extension they refuse to recognize what God is doing.
Outwardly they serve God, but they like their status quo, and so when God starts doing something new, they refuse to help
sinners are repenting and coming to God, that a good thing, but the Priests refuse to recognize it.
Jesus then tells them another parable:

33 “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. 35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

“ ‘The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone;

this was the Lord’s doing,

and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.

THe ironic thing is that the people recognize the truth of what Jesus is saying, and the Preists do figure out the parable, but they refuse to get the hint.
The priesthood in the days of Jesus was largely made up of Sadducees, these were people who did not believe in prophets and only believed a portion of the old testament. they liked that they had wealth and power, and did not like giving it up, they also tended to be more friendly with the romans, and tried to maintain order between the romans and the Jews.
The parble speaks of servants - likely the prophets, who were killed, sometimes by the jewish priesthood.
THen Jesus tells them what they already figured out, that he “the son sent by the father” would be murdered by them.
THey still seek to get rid of him, knowing that it will bring judgement on them.
So who are the new tenants?
THe Church.
Its all fine and good that we are the new tenants of the vineyard, but what does that mean for us?
What are we to do as tenants?
When Jesus was with his diciples - the beginning of the church, he talks about what he expects from them

14 “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Talent = $600,000.00
THe master gives to the servants based on how capable they are,
He expects them to do buisness while he is away.
5 talents and 2 talents both double their intitial investment.
the one talent servant just makes sure it is safe - he doesn’t want to risk losing his masters money.
Church in this parable we are the servants.
Christ is the master, while he is away he expects us to use what we have to help the kingdom grow
If we are faithful enough to take risks, to speak to people, we will see that growth,
but if we don’t take risks, if we don’t share the love of Jesus with others, if we share the gospel, if we just focus on ourselves and refuse to share the kingdom with others - then we are no better than the priests and the pharisees.
Church we have been given a wonderful gift, we get to be part of God’s kingdom! but that gift is useless to us if we do not share it with others.
If we do not share our gifts, or talents, our time, our love, our hope with others, then we risk losing it all.
