THE WAY TO OBEDIENCE (Mark 4:39-41
Mark 4:39–41 NKJV
Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
INTRODUCTION: Obedience is spoken about, all throughout the Bible. Man cannot please God without it. It is very important that we learn what obedience means if we are expecting approval from God.
I. What Is Obedience?
a. The online Oxford Dictionary defines obedience as: one having compliance with an order, and submission to another’s authority. We should stay away from anything that would cause us to be disobedient.
b. Taking a look at obedience in the book of Mark, the 4th chapter, verses 39-41 “Peace, be still! We all remember that verse.
c. God commanded the wind and sea to cease and they both obeyed.
II. Obedience is Something That is Learned.
a. We learn obedience when we make mistakes, but we don’t go back and make those same mistakes again.
b. Ephesians 4: 20-24, is a great example of learning obedience to God. That is the key.
c. I learned obedience through Christ, when I obeyed the gospel and gave Him my life.
1. That emptiness I had, has been filled. I am no longer lonely because I can talk to Him anytime I please.
III. The Test of Obedience.
a. Jesus throughout His ministry passed the ultimate test of obedience. And God wants that for us. 1 Peter 1:13-16
b. Our faith is right when we are willing to do what God wants us to do.
c. There will be times when fear confronts your faith. Your actions after that are what determine your obedience to God.
CONCLUSION: Obedience is mentioned 38 times, and obey is mentioned 170 times. It seems that this is something that is very important to God. And if it’s important to Him, It should be important to us too. As a new brother in Christ, I get emotional at the things I learn from God. Like acknowledging His authority and submitting to all that He asks of us. We shouldn’t let the wrong choices, stand in the way of a life of righteousness.
