Good Evening,
What is the fear of the Lord?
Turn with me to Proverbs 1, starting in verse 1.
Proverbs 1:1–6 “1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, 3 to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; 4 to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— 5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, 6 to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.”
The book of Proverbs is a Wisdom book and it builds on this compare and contrast relationship between Wisdom and Folly, or the wise man and the foolish. These first 6 verses tell us the whole point of the book, and it builds all of this stuff up. We see it is to know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, it includes instruction in wise dealings, righteousness, justice, and equity, prudence, knowledge and discretion. It is hear to increase in learning and to obtain guidance. However if we go one more verse, we see that all of these are dependent upon something,
Proverbs 1:7 “7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
