To your advantage

To your advantage for help coming (Jn14:16-18)
John 14:16–18 “16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
To your advantage He will teach you (Jn14:26)
John 14:26 “26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”
To your advantage I go so He can come (Jn16:5-7)
John 16:5–7 “5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.”
When the Holy Spirit was sent, He was sent to the church not to the world. He works through the word and through the church
Wiersbe: “The Holy Spirit does not minister in a vacuum. Just as the Son of God had to have a body in order to do His work on earth, so the Spirit of God needs a body to accomplish His ministries; and that body is the church. Our bodies are His tools and temples, and He wants to use us to glorify Christ and to witness to a lost world.”
(Transition) It is better, it is to our advantage that Jesus left, sent His Holy Spirit to the apostles and poured out on all flesh (made available to all). Tonight we will see the work of the Holy Spirit in the world.

Our Passage

John 16:8–9 NASB95
8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
John 16:10–12 NASB95
10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
John 16:13 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
John 16:14–15 NASB95
14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
Anything stick out to you in this passage?
What promise, assurance do you find (v.8)?
What is the sin mentioned in (v.9)?
What does Jesus say about the ruler of this world (v.11)?
What does Jesus say, not say (v.12)?

The works in the world

The Holy Spirit was being sent so that the apostles would not loose heart when He leaves. To comfort the troubled hearts. They needed to stay connected so can bear fruit, accomplish the task He has called them to do.
Tonight we are looking at the works of the Holy Spirit in the world. Now I know I just said he was not sent to the world but to the believers, so how do you think the Holy Spirit works in the world?
Convict picture here
Your version may use the word “reprove.” This word is more than just “proved or found guilty, convicted.” In the Greek sense it has the ideas of expose, refute, and to convince.
This is the work of the Holy Spirit in the world and in the individual hearts; to convince and convict of these truths.” -F.F. Bruce
If your’s say’s reprove that comes with the meaning “to bring to light, to expose, to refute, to convict and convince.”
Before conviction by the Holy Spirit one may say “I have made mistakes, I’m not perfect.” Since conviction “I’m a lost rebel, fighting against God and his law; I must rely on Jesus to get right with God.” - Trapp
He convicts concerning sin, righteousness and judgment.
Convict of sin: the world is convicted of sin because of unbelief. The world may think they are judging Christians as many different things, but it is really Christians passing judgment on the world as they witness to Jesus Christ.
One commentator said: “Believers are the witnesses, the Holy Spirit is the ‘prosecuting attorney,’ and the unsaved are the guilty prisoners.
While there is a conviction, a condemnation the hope and desire is for it to bring a conversion.
What is the sin conviction? It is unbelief! Courson says: It is the work of the Spirit, through the witness of the believers, to expose the unbelief of the lost world. After all, it is unbelief that condemns the lost sinner, not the committing of individual sins. A person could ‘clean up his life’ and quit his or her bad habits and still be lost and go to hell.”
I know it is a night of some good quotes
Tenney: “The Spirit does not merely accuse men of sin, he brings to them an inescapable sense of guilt so that they realize their shame and helplessness before God.”
The sin again is unbelief, the rejection of Jesus, that is what proves one to be guilty. The Holy Spirit will convict by exposing righteousness.
Not convicting of unrighteousness but of righteousness of Jesus Christ.
John 1:10 NASB95
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
The world had Jesus, but rejected Him and accused him of being a blasphemer (Jn10:33); lawbreaker (Jn5:16); deceiver (Mt12:27-29); and that one covers even being called a demoniac; there are other things He was accused of too, but will stop there.
staying with righteousness, it was because of Jesus righteousness that He was able to ascend, completing His work here and the Holy Spirit to come.
Righteousness, Smith says:
“Many people today, even secular people, take the righteousness of Jesus as a given. Yet during His life Jesus was reviled as an imposter, as demon-possessed, as a wicked destroyer of the law, as a glutton, a drunk and as illegitimate. The Holy Spirit persuades the work of the righteousness of Jesus.”
The Holy Spirit reveals the righteousness of God in the heart of the believer that convicts the world of the sin of unbelief hopefully to lead to conversion.
The next one is judgment, this is judgement of the ruler of this world (Satan)
That has already been done (he is a defeated foe), and the sentence yet to be carried out.
True conviction brings understanding of the gravity of sin, the folly of unbelief and an awareness that one does not live up to the standard of the righteousness of Jesus Christ. - - - that should bring to the solution Jesus Christ whom God sent to make us alive in Him!
There can be no conversion without conviction, and there can be no conviction apart from the Spirit of God using the Word of God and the witness of the child of God.
(Transition) This now brings the works of the Holy Spirit among the disciples (and then the church).

Holy Spirit works among the disciples

John 16:12 NASB95
12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
This is not that Jesus had a loss of words, He had many. But it needed to be the right words at the right time so they would be received and applied.
The Holy Spirit among the disciples would bring those words
Jesus knew there was much for them to learn, to be taught so they could finish the work (write the epistles).
There are those who say “ I believe the words in red, you can keep those of Paul or the others.” - - - if you believe that, you don’t believe the words in red either for they tell you there was more to say.
John 16:13–15 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
He will guide you in all truth
There is the fulfillment in that all truth was revealed and recorded in the writings inspired by the Holy Spirit.
All truth is specific truth, truth about Jesus and about what was to come

Return of Christ
“It is essential that we see the work of the Spirit of God is never divorced from Jesus Christ or the Word of God. He testifies of Jesus (16:15), glorifies Jesus (16:14). The Spirit is the spirit of truth (16:13) to lead to truth (Jn16:13), and Jesus is the truth (Jn14:6) and to truth being the word too (Jn17:17). Where the Holy Spirit is at work, there must be truth.” - Wiersbe (scriptures mine)
