Galatians 5:16–26 KJV 1900
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

I. Review

A. Last week we went through verses 16-17.

1. We need to walk in the Spirit so that we can continue to please God.

2. We discussed that it doesn’t matter how hard we try that we find ourselves doing the things that we don’t want to do.

3. We discussed how we are all born in sin.

4. We talked about how to be able to overcome sin we must be born of the Spirit.

5. To walk in the Spirit you must be born of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:18 KJV 1900
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

II. What does it mean to be led of the Spirit?

A. Paul tells us in Romans that we are the sons of God if we are led by the Spirit.

Romans 8:14 KJV 1900
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

B. To become a son of God. John tells us that we need to believe on His name.

John 1:12 KJV 1900
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

1. Who’s name is this?

John 1:13–18 KJV 1900
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

i. So, if we are to be born of the Spirit in order to walk in the Spirit and become the son of God. We must first believe in His name, the name of Jesus!

Acts 4:10–12 KJV 1900
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Mark 16:16–18 KJV 1900
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Philippians 2:9–11 KJV 1900
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

ii. Salvation can only be found in the name of Jesus!

2. Believing is only the first step in this salvation process.

i. First, you believe because a preacher preached.

Romans 10:13–17 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

ii. Secondly, you repent of your sins.

Acts 2:38 KJV 1900
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

iii. Next, you are baptized in that name in which you began this process, and that is in Jesus’ name!

iv. Finally, you are filled with the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in tongues.

Galatians 5:18 KJV 1900
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

C. When you are led of the Spirit, Paul says that you are no longer under the law.

1. So, if we are no longer under the law, does that mean we can do whatever we want and never have to answer to the government? NO!

i. Paul tells us in Romans and Colossians that we become dead to the law of sin and death!

Romans 8:2 KJV 1900
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Colossians 2:10–15 KJV 1900
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

ii. Jesus became victorious over death, hell, and the grave so that we could be free from the bondage of the law of sin and death!

a. This is the reason that the Apostle wrote Romans 6:2!
Romans 6:1–2 KJV 1900
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
b. We are no longer slave to sin because its by the power of His name and the blood that He shed at Calvary that gives us the strength not to sin.
c. Earlier in the book of Romans Paul tells us that just like sin reigned unto death. Grace will reign through righteousness unto eternal life!
Romans 5:19–21 KJV 1900
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
d. Let’s reach back before we close and see what John said:
John 1:17 KJV 1900
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
e. Through Moses right and wrong was revealed to us!
f. Through Jesus Christ we find freedom from that law!
Acts 13:34–39 KJV 1900
34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. 35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
g. Because we are no longer bound by the law we no longer have to sin!
Romans 6:11–14 KJV 1900
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
