I think today if we get into the shoes of this poor father, we will see he had the longest walk ever
He had to trust Jesus and follow Him as everyone else laughed at him
This would have been hard, but it gives us faith for what we have to walk through

You can see we are in the section where Jesus is doing lots of miracles in this section to show that He must be heard and followed

Jesus came back from across the lake
We saw this different characters
One of them is Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue who had great influence and leadership
But his 12 year old daughter was dying, almost gone
We said how humbling it must have been for him to go to Jesus, but sickness humbles people

We meet another woman who had suffered with bleeding for 12 years
we talked about how this was a shameful sickness that would have excluded her
She touches Jesus and is healed completely when all the doctors she saw could do nothing
But then Jesus stops to ask who touched him, exposing her
Instead of hiding, she boldly tells him in front of everyone what God has done for her and what she went through.

Back to our main character
When we read her story we talk about how great that Jesus was willing to be interrupted
But why might Jairus be in a hurry and annoyed at this interruption?
His daughter is dying and he wants to get back to her
You can imagine him looking at the sun to think how long its been since he left and worried what will happen if they take too long
Then, before Jesus words, “go in peace,” finish coming out of his mouth a messenger arrives from his family with the worse news possible
THe daughter is dead
The word means to die physically, sometimes spiritually, be clearly they mean physically here
So he says stop annoying or harassing Jesus
It is the idea of tormenting or grating the ski
How devastating.
How would you feel if someone said you need to stop annoying at doctor right after you heard your daughter died?
What would you want to do Next?
And imagine what he would have felt about that women
RC Sproul- Obviously he had feelings like anybody else; I am sure he was glad that this woman had been healed, but who could blame him for thinking, ‘If only Jesus hadn’t taken the time to heal this woman, he would have made it to my house and maybe saved my daughter. But now it is too late! There is nothing he can do now.’
But… that’s such a powerful word right
Jesus redirected him

Every thought and despair must have gone through that man’s mind
Can you think of any?
What happens next? What if I had bene a few minutes early? How will I face by wife? Was embarrassing myself a waste?
My sister in law’s daughter died from Leukemia at 8 years old and said one of the greatest losses is not just the child, but all the future of the child is lost now
The man probably felt the future pain o0f loss of the life he expected,
This is often still the way today as counselor Ed welch writes,

“The church consists of people who sit in a pool of their own tears.” So believe a growing number of pastors, counselors, and lay people.
“the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth” (Romans 8:22). Human life entails misery and woe. Broken relationships, agonizing illness, the prospect of one’s own death, depression, injustice and atrocity, quiet yet paralyzing fear,
Jesus says, do not go there
Instead, believe
The word believe can be a little more complex because it can have many meanings,
But it implies to have faith, to put one’s trust in something
But it’s not super clear what...
He doesn’t say go to your house or says these words or anything
He just says trust
Who does Jesus want Jairus to Trust? Why is that hard?
Jesus is the one who stopped and blessed someone else but left this man to suffer
Remember Luke 7:7- Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.
But Jesus didn’t say the word here, He didn’t hear her
Yet Jesus gives the promise, she will be saved
It is the same word in verse 48 that the women’s faith
God is greater than all the things we fear.
These stories don’t teach that we’ll never face sickness or death.
Instead they teach us that we needn’t fear the circumstances of life because God is in control. He works good for us in every circumstance. He’ll bring us safely home to glory.
Death is not the last word:
Just as that women had to walk 12 years without any answer, so this man would have to walk the hard journey back to his home
Let’s be careful with the application here:
A bad interpretation can take place
Henry Blackaby looked at John 11 : 4 ithe sickness of Lazarus would glorify God when Jesus raised him from the dead . So, God promised that his daughter Carrie wouldn’t die from her cancer . Blackaby turned a description of one man’s sickness into a promise of his daughter’s healing .

Q: What did the man think would happen to his daughter?
Remember, the original audience reading this knew this was about showing Jesus to be worth listening to.
Jesus presence was getting rid of all sickness in the, pointing to the day when death would finally be destroyed:
1 Corinthians 15:25–26 “25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”

Are we to pray for healing?

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
But is everyone promised to be healed? Paul sure didn’t assume that was true:
27 Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
God does heal, but the story is not done yet

Q: What is the theological principle in this text?
Notice the example given, Jesus corrects the man fear, so we should not be afraid
and we should trust Jesus’ promises

Romans 8:28–29 “28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”
God will be with us and the ultimate good o making us like Jesus will take place

So how can we follow Jesus as we trust His promises today?
Pastor Tim Chester gives the example of:
We often associate the sovereignty of God with theological debates. But for all of us it’s a daily practical choice.. For me, the issue is escapism. I have to choose between a fantasy in which I’m sovereign and the real world in which God is sovereign, between my false sovereignty and God’s real sovereignty. When I feel like running away, I have to choose to find refuge in God
Now he has to have that faith tested in front of others

Jairus had to walk through the street probably with the whole crowd following since they just saw a miracle
Jesus arrives at the man’s house and leaves the crowd behind
The houses of Capernaum were constructed of basalt stone. These excavated houses provide the best picture of what the city looked like in the 1st century AD.
Jairus reunites with his wife
and the inner circle of Peter, John and James who repeatedly get to see what others do not.
Why were Peter, James and John chosen to be with the Lord at key moments of his ministry—the transfiguration, the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Lord’s prayer at Gethsemane?
Why do we get upset when things are not “fair” and someone else has great privileges than me?
But as they enter they see a crowd weeping
We’ve talked about the Jewish culture of death
Jewish custom was to follow death with an elaborate mourning ritual that included musicians and professional mourners.
Think about how These professionals were experienced in recognizing death;
there can be no reasonable doubt that the young girl was really dead and not simply in a coma.
Jesus comes in seeing those professional mourners and says, stop crying because she’s not dead
look at verse 55, Is she dead?
To have the spirit return means that the spirit was gone… she was dead
and who is saying that?
The narrator! So it’s true
Remember that the phrase falling asleep was a nice way of saying they are dead
John 11:11 “After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.””
John 11:12–15 “The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.””
If you’re asleep, you wake up and she will wake up
Jesus’ phrase ‘she sleeps’ simply indicated that she would be restored to life, as Luke 8:55 establishes.[1]

what is death to people is no more than sleep to Jesus (cf. John 11:11–14); in the New Testament believers are never said to die, but to sleep
Acts 7:60 “60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.”
But what was their response?
They know she is dead… it was their job!
How would this make Jarius feel?
One of the greatest forms of fear is fear of man
Ed Welch, in his book When People are Big and God is Small, says
fear of man has many symptoms: susceptibility to peer pressure; ‘needing’ something from a spouse; a concern with self-esteem; fear of being exposed; small lies to make yourself look good; people making you jealous, angry, depressed or anxious
The world tells you the solution is to high self esteem where you only care about you thinkBut that doesn’t work because We become dependent on whatever or whoever will boost our self-esteem.
But that doesn’t work because We become dependent on whatever or whoever will boost our self-esteem.
Instead, you need to worship a god who is so terrifying the only thing that could please him is Himself
How does following Jesus replace fear of man?

Jesus walks into the room with the little girl, dead on the bed like this famous, if inaccurate drawing
Jesus takes her hand and says, arise
The girl returned to her former earthly life, not to the final resurrection state
Her spirit came again and she got up straightway. He didn’t just bring her back from death to a semi-comatose state; no, she was able to get up from her bed and Jesus called for food to be brought for her.
We all know that someone is healthy again by how someone eats
Why are her parents amazed?
The emphasis cannot be missed Jesus is described as the First and the Last, the one who has the keys of death and Hades (Rev 1:17–18). Luke’s purpose in this section is to reveal to Theophilus that the Jesus in whom he believed possesses all power and authority and can save from all things those who call upon his name.
The use of the term “saved” to describe the woman’s healing and the girl’s resuscitation clearly would remind Luke’s readers of such preaching as found in Acts 16:31, which they themselves had heard and to which they themselves had responded. Salvation comes through faith, and the woman and Jairus revealed the kind of faith that Jesus seeks.
Jesus then does no faith healer today does
He said tell no one!
Consider Luke 8:56. Why were Jairus and his wife told to tell no one of this healing? See Luke 5:14, 15; 9:21
How many more followers could have come knowing Jesus could bring the dead back!
Jesus frequently does this
Luke 4:41 “41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.”
The disciples’ care not yet commissioned and sent into the world. But when that time came, they were to go, and speak boldly
John Macarthur writes, “One clear reason for such a restriction was to make clear that the message He wanted His followers to spread was not that He was a healer or a political liberator, but a Savior who died and rose from the dead”
How does this show us Jesus’ emphasis was on His teaching and not the miracles He could preform?
How should we emphasize the teaching and trusting part instead of the miracles?
I think one of the problems we sometimes do is tell the people how God answered our prayer or we just tell the miracle
We can get the idea that there always needs to be a resurrection or some happy life lesson at the end..
But the point is the talk about Jesus. The man was met by Jesus
