Leaders have a proper mindset

Every runner knows that only half of the race is up to their physical performance. The other half is in their head. That’s why coaches give their runners a pep talk before each race. The runner’s state of mind can make it or break it just as easily as their physical ability. It’s the same way in leadership. A leader needs more than a set of leadership skills; they need great character as well. When our skills and our character get out of balance, bad leadership happens.
Romans 12:1–2 (NIV)
A Living Sacrifice
12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
So we see here that in order to be able to truly know God’s will then we need to make sure that we have a pure mind, and we have to make sure that we are not conforming to this world around us.
So you may be thinking but how do I transform my mind. Well the Bible has an answer for that as well.
Philippians 4:8–9 (NIV)
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
This passage is what I like to call the Philippians 4:8 test. Because here is the thing, if you set yourself out not to do something, and you are constantly thinking dont do that, dont do that, dont do that. The odds are you are probably going to do it.
However if you set your mind on the things that we should do, we are much more likely to avoid doing the things we shouldnt.

When someone is being trained on how to spot counterfeit money, they dont teach them all the ways that money is counterfeit. They teach us every little detail about the real dollar, so that whenever we see something that doesnt match that, we know its fake.
Leadership is the same way. We have to be looking to God to try to learn how to be the best leader we can be, that way whenever we see someone that isnt leading well, it will be easy for us to spot. and there are plenty of examples of terrible leaders out there.
some leaders trample people; others get nothing done. In fact, truly great leaders only emerge when their skills and their character are in balance. In other words, who a leader is and what that leader does are equally important.

Leaders follow good examples

As a leader you also have to know who to follow, because you are only ever going to go as far as the people around you. If you surround yourself with people that are constantly pulling you down, you arent going to go ver far as a leader, but if you have people lifting you up, then you will be able to achieve unimaginable goals.

This is a good example of having to make sure that we surround ourselves with the right people. We have to determine which people are wanting our best for us, and then make sure that we are following those people
One example of a great leader is Nehemiah
Nehemiah was good at balancing the doing and the being of leadership. He had a lot of leadership skills. As cupbearer to the king, he managed people, vineyards, farms, and a pretty prestigious catering business. Nehemiah knew how to lead, but he was careful not to lose himself or compromise who he was when his leadership increased. Take a look at Nehemiah’s journal to see how he kept the balance of doing and being when he was about to begin the leadership challenge of a lifetime.
Nehemiah 1:1–4 (NIV)
Nehemiah’s Prayer
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:
In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
We can see here that when Nehemiah heard that the Jewish people were struggling because they did not have walls that he began to weep. This was a big deal because walls in that time were their protection from outside invaders, thieves, as well as giving the people as sense of belonging.
Those are the people that we need to have in our lives. the type of people that when they see that we are struggling or that we may not have boundaries in the proper places that they begin to weep for us.
But Nehemiah doesnt stop there
Nehemiah 2:1–5 (NIV)
Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem
2 In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, 2 so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
I was very much afraid, 3 but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
4 The king said to me, “What is it you want?”
Then I prayed to the God of heaven, 5 and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”
Not only did Nehemiah weep over the lack of walls he did something about it. We need people in our lives that are going to not just see where we have struggles or difficulties, but people that are willing and brave enough to step up and do something about it.
