The Series: Live Ready

Title of the message this Morning

Ready Your Soul - Week 1

Big Idea:
The most important aspect of being ready is having a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
We do not know when He will return, but one day He will.
We must all take an honest assessment of our hearts and lives and ask ourselves if we have placed our faith, hope, and trust in Jesus and the saving work He did on the cross.
Once we make this decision, we don’t have to be afraid of anything that might come our way.
Prayer:
“Lord help us to live vigilant and ready lives as we commit fully to you and your ways.
Let us prosper through the highs and lows of life as you faithfully lead us.”
Scripture: Matthew 24:42-44; John 16:33; Acts 1:8; Joshua 1:8; Romans 10:9
(All scripture quoted comes from the NIV unless otherwise noted)

Introduction

Good morning once again, friends!
I’m thankful you decided to join us online today as we begin a brand-new sermon series.
Over the next four weeks we will be talking about how to Live Ready…
As we all know, life can throw many curve balls our way.
Not to mention, we live in the midst of constant change.
(Ukraine, Russia - Israel, Hamas, - Mass Shootings)
This constant change can cause us to question God, be confused in our faith, or have doubts.

Have you ever struggled with doubts about faith?

I want to introduce you to a guy named John Wesley who lived in England from 1703-1791.
He was the 15th of 19 kids, and his mom home schooled them all.
His father was a pastor in the Anglican Church, and John himself became a pastor in that same church.
Early on as a minister, Wesley struggled with doubts about his faith.
He shared this with his good friend, Peter Böhler, and Böhler gave him some good advice, “Preach faith until you have it. And then, because you have it, you will preach faith.”
Basically, fake it ’til you make it.
Wesley took that advice and soon after led someone to the Lord by preaching faith alone in Christ.
This person gladly accepted the message and his life changed immediately.
Wesley was surprised at the guy’s sudden life change because Wesley himself hadn’t experienced similar changes.
Soon after, on May 24, 1738, at 8:45PM, Wesley was at a meeting of believers in Aldersgate, and as he was listening to someone read Martin Luther’s Preface to the Epistle to Romans, Wesley says, “I felt my heart strangely warmed.
I felt I did trust in Christ, and Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given to me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.”
God unexpectedly showed up at that moment!
Wesley felt his heart strangely warmed and discovered he did have faith.
God can show up in any situation at any moment and change a life, often when we least expect Him.
With Wesley, the rest is history.
His life did change.
He went on to start the Methodist movement in both England and the United States.
When he died at age 88, he left behind 130,000 people who gave their lives to Christ; he had hundreds of thousands of dollars pass through his hands that he channeled to the poor, to widows, to the hungry, and more.
He died nearly broke with only a few coins in his pocket because he distributed so much wealth to those in need, keeping a bare minimum for himself.
Throughout this series we’re going to talk about how God can show up in any situation at any moment, and how we must learn to Live Ready through the highs and lows of life.

Main Teaching

When I say, Live Ready, I’m sure there are many images that come to mind.
For me, I think about being vigilant, alert, and awake.
In regards to our souls, we’ve got to stay awake and alert throughout our lives.
God can and will show up in some of the most unexpected and unusual moments…
So, we keep watch.

I. Keep Watch

If you have a Bible with you, turn to Matthew 24.
This is a passage of Scripture where Jesus talks about the future, things to come.
Here is what He challenges us to do in this passage…
Read Matthew 24:42-44
Jesus, in this passage, is speaking about himself.
He says that we must keep watch for his coming.
What does he mean by this?
The Bible talks about the second coming of Christ.
We know, celebrated during Christmas time, that Jesus has come once to earth as a baby boy to save us from our sin!
But there came a point in the ministry of Jesus when He returned to heaven.
However, he surely left us with a promise as we await His return.
Wouldn’t it be so cool if we could know when a crime would be committed?
This is the very thing Jesus says in relation to His second coming.
No one fully knows when the “Son of Man” will return, but the fact that he will return should affect our lives daily.
If Jesus is to come back, there is work to be done!
Read Acts 1:8
This, in a nutshell, is the task that we as followers of Christ have been given while our King Jesus is away.
We are called to share His message of hope and salvation with all the world!
With this kind of message and task, we do not have to be afraid of things that would come our way.
Maybe today, you feel as if there is something holding you back from going all in for Christ.
You feel like your joy has been stolen from you on countless occasions, or you have lost all hope to keep moving forward.
Regardless of where you are today, the message of Christ is still the same…
“You will face trouble, but take heart, and keep watch, for I have overcome the world and empower you as well.” (John 16:33) Are we truly ready “all the time”, as Jesus says in this Matthew passage?
ILLUSTRATION:
There’s a pastor named Levi Lusko, who once said:
“If Jesus came back right in the middle of you sinning against God, what would that be like?”
Make the point that clearly, this would affect you one way or another.
It would change your decision making process.
This image should be one we keep in the front of our minds daily.
God calls us to say “no” to certain things in the world, so that we may say “yes” to the things He wants to offer us.
We must keep watch over our own lives and invite those into that process with us as we continue growing in faith, hope, and love.

II. Keep Learning

As we think about the life-long process of faith, and the continuous work of sanctification in our lives, it is imperative that we stay curious and stay committed to learning.
The Word of God is meant to serve as our guide for everyday life here on earth.
Isn’t it a beautiful thing that Jesus did not leave us without the help of the Holy Spirit?
Instead, He gave us a wonderful guide.
Some of you here may know the story of Joshua in the Old Testament.
Here is what the Lord says in verse 8 of chapter 1…
Read Joshua 1:8
God says that the keys for Joshua to prosper and succeed in all he does lie in whether the book of the Law would guide his every move.
Is this the case for us today?
Does the Bible really take priority in our lives?
Are you saturated with the Word every day, or are you content with a sparse sprinkling of it?
STORY:
Tell a story about when you went through a dry season. Focus on what was affected in your life because of your lack of intimacy with God and His Word in that season.
We all hit these seasons where we feel distant from God and His Word.
But in those seasons, our painful and tragic situations are often multiplied in terms of our response to them.
The Bible is meant to guide us through our responses in every given scenario in life.
The question is, will we do it God’s way?
If the answer is to be “yes”, we must keep learning about what God says in His Word.
This looks like some sort of daily devotion.
It’s similar to what a heart doctor would tell you.
Want to stay healthy? Workout in some form every day for 30 minutes.
This has to do with strengthening muscles in our physical body.
It is the same for our spiritual life.
If we want to become close to God and respond well to the tough things we face, we must not only keep watch, but we must also stay committed to learning.

III. Come to Christ

The reality of living ready and vigilant lives over our souls…
Our eternal state of being…
Is that we ultimately need to come into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Bible says that people like you and me naturally live in a sinful state.
Many of you probably know the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3, where sin entered the world and all humanity to follow.
Naturally, the only possible sacrificial offering to take care of sin’s power had to be perfect.
And today, this is why we have hope in Jesus Christ for what is called Salvation.
That is, that Jesus has saved us from our sin so that we might spend eternity with Him in heaven one day, free from pain, suffering, temptation, and all the negative consequences of sin.
We can live ready and confident for any and every “curve ball” that life may throw our way when we are sure of our salvation.
Our response is to accept this gift and come to Him personally.
And the good news is, the Bible tells us exactly how to do this.

Conclusion

Read Romans 10:9
If we will confess, even right here in this moment, that Jesus is Lord and place Him on the throne of our hearts and lives, He will save our souls!
In each of us, there is someone or something that is currently residing on the “throne” of our hearts.
It directs our every step and calls us to press into it for sustenance.
But the problem is, only Christ can truly satisfy our heart’s desires.
He can even align our desires with His, ultimately those that are best.
What is it in your heart today that's keeping you from a relationship with Christ?
I speak from personal experience when I say that this relationship will truly change everything for you.
Will you give up sinful ways of life to follow Jesus?
Will you ready your soul, and commit yourself to Him?
Let’s pray together.

Salvation:

The Word of God says in:
John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
