ILLUST: Favorite place to go, visit, shop, etc.
John 6:16-40 after the 5000 fed
Jesus had demonstrated His power to provide - bread
Jesus will demonstrate His command over nature
Wilderness - manna from Heaven, after parting the Red Sea
Here - bread for thousands, then walking on water
How much more poetic can John get?
Matthew records Peter walking on the water in this account
Also, this is not a thunderstorm, this is high winds which whip down from the Golan Heights and make for a dangerous sea

GREAT QUESTION - What Do You Want?

John the Baptist/Witness

(What John had to offer)
He asked this
“What did you come here for? What did you expect to see?”
They came to see what He was saying, why He was baptizing
What he offered was an opportunity to openly repent
Not what they expected
Not what they came for - so they left

Jesus

(What Jesus had to offer)
He doesn’t even ask the people
Truly, truly...
He tells them why they came to Him, what they were looking for, what they expected
More signs
More food
A show - be entertained
They expected Him to be there for them (which He was, of course, just not quite how they expected)
POINT HERE
The church is told to feed the poor, as if culture will accept us more then - they will not
Churches who are mostly social ministries are not respected by society, they are used by society, and the people in those churches are not getting the Gospel nor the truth of God’s Word
And…here, Jesus clearly does not feed these people again, he dismisses them. He gave them a chance to hear Him, He was kind and fed them, and they came after Him for more food and signs
....Nuff said
QUESTIONING JESUS
“Fine, what works can we do to earn your favor?” (stuck on the Law and believed the right combination of works did it)
“Believe in Me” - that is the work you must do
But...“Moses gave us manna”
Jesus: “NO, I GAVE YOU MANNA, GOD GAVE THE MANNA”
So here is what I have to give you
Me - the true bread out of Heaven
GOD’S WILL - to trust Jesus
Those who accept Jesus, who know God, will always be His
Jesus, personally, will raise them up
If that’s you, He’ll raise you up
Is that you?
Want to know how to be in God’s will?
Trust Jesus - surrender to Him, follow Him
So what do YOU want from Jesus?
People wanted the products of Him, but not Him
So, what do YOU want from Him?

Let me tell you of a couple things He’s given, offered to us - and why

The Church

The local church - Coming to Jesus means coming to the physical presence of His body, the local church
Ask yourself the same questions as above - related to the church
What do you want from the church?
What does the church want from you?
First - What do you want from the church? Why do you come here?
Correct temperature? Got it! :)
Fellowship meal, your favorite songs, study topics YOU like, then get rid of guilt, earn points to get to Heaven, hear a great sermon? Habit?
“What will THIS church do for ME?” and if it can’t, I’ll go look around for one that will
Second - what does this church want from you? Why was this church given to us by Him?
Church is about Him, not you
What should YOU bring? What can you GIVE?
Your worship
Your fellowship - spiritual presence and involvement
Your sacrificial giving
Your unique talent and interests
YOU - what opportunities to grow are you missing, simply by ignoring most of the ministry available here to help you grow?
THIS church was important enough to Jesus to die for it. Literally
And to the vast majority, it’s not even important enough to show up even once a week - and that is saddening
The vast majority put church involvement maybe third or fourth on their list of things to do on Sunday
People want the products of the church, what we have to offer you, how we can entertain you, keep you interested, and so on
But get serious about really BEING the church? Nah...
(The Word and Prayer are given, too, and we’ll discuss another day), but the other key thing that Jesus given to us, that He ALWAYS wanted people to come and ask Him for:

Forgiveness

Jesus offers - forgiveness
That is what you come to Jesus for - forgiveness
Most important application/doctrine in Scripture
Jesus begs for the weary to come to Him
Matthew 11:28 NASB95
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
People are weary from sin
There is no peace without forgiveness >> peace = rest
When you know joy and peace, you can rest
When you understand forgiveness, you can rest
BEING forgiving, BEING forgiven
The enemy reminds me, daily, of all I have done wrong, all my past and current failures
Jesus reminds me, daily, that I am forgiven - done, settled!
Why did you come to Jesus, what did you come for?
Peace, Joy, belonging, etc.? All good
I came for FORGIVENESS - and He said YES
I forget that at times, the past creeps in, ever feel that way?
Forgiveness puts the past in its place, in the past
When you truly understand forgiveness, you’ll stop thinking all this is about you, and realize it’s all about Christ
Living for Him will not be a burden or struggle, but a joy, a daily, purposeful effort to be with Jesus
And instead of asking Him for selfish things
You’ll thank Him for forgiving you
And you will enjoy that…FOREVER
Peace…the world says they want it
But they don’t want Jesus
What do YOU want from Jesus?
What He can give you now?
or what He can provide forever...
