Theme: The Compassion in Discipleship
Word for the Week Love: It is a caring commitment, in which affection and delight are shown to others, which is grounded in the nature of God himself. In his words and actions, and supremely in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, God demonstrates the nature of love and defines the direction in which human love in all its forms should develop.
Memory verse: 1 Peter 3:8 (NKJV) Finally, all [of you be] of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, [be] tenderhearted, [be] courteous;
Essence of the Text: In this passage, Jesus prepared to give His life as a ransom and gave His disciples a commandment to follow.
Proposition: Christ is calling all saints to love each other as He has loved them.
Objective: I want those in attendance, to evaluate their love for the saints and respond with obedience.
Sermon Passage: John 13:34-35
John 13:34–35 NKJV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I. A NEW EDICT TO COMPLY WITH

John 13:34 NKJV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
A NEW COMMANDMENT CHRIST GAVE TO HIS DISCIPLES
LOVE ONE ANOTHER
HE KNOW THAT THEY HAD HAD SOME DISPLEASURE WITHIN THE FAMILY
Matthew 20:24 NKJV
24 And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers.
He commanded them to love one another
Romans 12:10 NKJV
10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN THE COMMAND HAS NOT BEEN FOLLOWED.

WHEN WRONGED

1 Corinthians 6:6–8 NKJV
6 But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers! 7 Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? 8 No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!

WHEN SELFISH

James 4:1–3 NKJV
1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

WHEN FULFILLING THE DESIRES OF THE FLESH

Galatians 5:13–15 NKJV
13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
Philippians 2:3 NKJV
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

II. AN EXAMPLE TO CONFORM TO

John 13:34 NKJV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
“As I have loved you”
The word “as” can be translated to mean as the NKJV has it manner
MANNER COULD REFER TO THE TYPE OF LOVE
CHRIST COULD BE TELLING HIS DISCIPLE JUST AS I HAVE LOVED YOU LOVE EACH OTHER
THIS VIEW IS CONSISTENT WITH

SUSTAINING LOVE

John 13:1 NKJV
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

SACRIFICIAL LOVE

John 13:14–15 NKJV
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
IF “KATHOS” IS TRANSLATED “SEEING THAT” OR “SINCE” IT WOULD POINT TO THE MOTIVE
MEANING CHRIST IS TELLING HIS DISCIPLES THAT THE MOTIVE TO LOVE EACH OTHER IS HIM.
THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH
1 John 3:16 NKJV
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
With the compassionate love Christ loved them

III. EVIDENCE TO CERTIFY YOU

LOVE FOR SAINTS IS THE MEASURING ROD
John 13:35 NKJV
35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

EVIDENCE OF SALVATION

1 John 3:10 NKJV
10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.
1 John 3:14–15 NKJV
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
1 John 4:7 NKJV
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
1 John 4:11 NKJV
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4:21 NKJV
21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

FAITH GOES WITH LOVE FOR THEM

Ephesians 1:15 NKJV
15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
Colossians 1:3–4 NKJV
3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints;
Philemon 5 NKJV
5 hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints,
2 Thessalonians 1:3 NKJV
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other,

ILLUSTRATION

1 Thessalonians 1:3 NKJV
3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,
1 Thessalonians 2:17–18 NKJV
17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire. 18 Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but Satan hindered us.
1 Thessalonians 3:1–2 NKJV
1 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, 2 and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith,
1 Thessalonians 3:6 NKJV
6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you—
