In this Sermon on the Plain, Jesus taught His disciples to love, forgive, and give based on the nature of the Father.

To Build on the Rock means to put into practice what the Lord has taught us.

We live in a litigious society. Over 40 million lawsuits are filed every year in the US, the most of any country.

These teachings are a call to a heart attitude toward others, not a binding law applied to all situations. It is a heart orientation toward trust and dependence upon the Lord, and an expectation of reward in heaven (v 35).

Love Supernaturally (27-35)

Love is not primarily a function of emotion, but of action.

Each of these statements are not possible in our own fleshly strength, but only through the power of the Lord.

Jesus says that the Golden rule applies not just to our neighbor, but also to our enemy! That is supernatural love!

When the layer wanted to justify himself in Luke 10, Jesus told him the story of the Good Samaritan to illustrate his how an enemy become a friend.

Forgive Fully (36-37)

Forgiveness is a matter of choice.

We are called to forgive because we have been forgiven by our merciful heavenly father.

When Christ was on the cross being beaten, mocked, spit upon, he forgave even his enemies.

Luke 23:34 “And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.”

Give Generously (38)

What kind of radical life would give to everyone who asks? Only one that is confident in the care of the Father.

When our trust is in the Lord we are able to give to meet the genuine needs of others.

This way of life is only truly possible if you have come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Build your life upon the Solid Rock of Christ and you will not be shaken!
