If you ask

Ask, Jesus speaks much, often about prayer, and asking in and through prayer. Is it good to do that, ask?
In our passage tonight one more time prayer is the central theme. I will expand more in a few minutes, but the word ask in our passage has a couple of different meanings.
(Below is on slide)
Ask (16:19, 23a, 26) - means to ask a questions, or to make a request. A request of someone equal
Ask (16:23b, 24, 26b) is to request something of a superior.
In our passage we see a shift, not asking of Jesus, but asking of the Father. One an equal (Jesus in the flesh) the other a superior.
Tonight I would like to touch on two things
A promise to believe (16:23-28)
A position to proclaim (16:29-33)

A promise to believe

John 16:23 NASB95
23 “In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.
John 16:24 NASB95
24 “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.
John 16:25 NASB95
25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father.
John 16:26 NASB95
26 “In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf;
John 16:27 NASB95
27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
John 16:28 NASB95
28 “I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and going to the Father.”
Any general observations, or anything stick out to you?
What will happen “in that day” (v.23)?
You will not question Me.
If you ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you
What is the purpose of the receiving (v.24)?
You will receive, so that your joy may be made full
There is a type of speech that changes (v.25) from one form, to another, what is it?
From figurative language to speaking plainly, plainly about the Father.
Jesus makes two bold statements they have heard before (v.28), what are they?
I came forth from the Father into the world
I am leaving the world and going to the Father.
In that day slide inserted here
John 16:23 NKJV
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.
What day? - is this the day He is day they see Him after the resurrection?
What day? - Is this the day of Pentecost when the promised Holy Spirit comes?
What day? - could it be the day that Christ returns for the church?
These are some of the thoughts that arise from “in that day.”
Logic can eliminate the later of these, there is no scripture proof of praying when we get to heaven
Logic now we can look at the first one, do you think the apostles had questions after the resurrection?
We know they worshipped Him.
(Do not need to read below, only for the handout)
___________________________
There are questions that come from “in that day.”
In that day, consider what the disciples did (Mt28:16-17; Act1:6; consider Jn16:13-14)
Also consider what they did not understand yet (1Tim2:5-6)
Jesus makes prayer with a purpose a priority (Jn14:12-14, 15:7, 16; 16:23-26)
_____________________________
Matthew 28:16–17 NASB95
16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.
Yes, there was questions too
Acts 1:6 NASB95
6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
So, this one is possible, but when you look contextually, what do you see?
John 16:13–14 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
In My name slide inserted here
Ask, this is the ask of a superior, ask. Until this time they had not done that (v.24) - - - they did not know that Jesus was the mediator
1 Timothy 2:5–6 “5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.”
The time was coming, that asking of the Father in His name because of Jesus work on the cross would give them as Guzik says: “Unlimited, undeniable access to the Father through Jesus.”
Morris: “the meaning is that the atoning death of Jesus will revolutionize the whole situation. On the basis of the Son’s atoning work men will approach God and know the answers to their prayers.”
The time was coming that they would know that asking of the Father, the Father will meet the need, just as Jesus met the need when He was with them.
The awesome and wonderful promise and privilege of prayer is that the Father would meet their needs.
Prayer was a priority to Jesus, and he wanted to make sure they understood. He had been talking about it in the upper room quite a bit already.
John 14:12–14 NASB95
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. 13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
Now look at Jn15:7
John 15:7 NASB95
7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
hold on not done yet
John 15:16 NASB95
16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
And our passage we have before us (16:23-26) - it is clear that prayer with a purpose needs to be a priority and the results are a fruitful Christian life
An Hour is coming slide inserted here
A new time, a new hour, a new situation was coming because of the resurrection and the ascension.
A new way, no longer in parables, no longer in figurative language but in plain language with a purpose.
In (v.25) what is the purpose of the plain language?
Tell you plainly of the Father.
The Holy Spirit was coming and would teach them all things, remind them of all things (14:26); He would guide them (16:13)
He will make Jesus evident, as well as the Father to them (16:17)
Consider what Jesus is saying about the Father here.
Barclay: “Here Jesus is saying: ‘You can go to God, because he loves you,’ and he is saying that before the cross. He did not die to change God into love; he died to tell us that God is love. He came, not because God so hated the world, but because he so loved the world. Jesus brought to men the love of God.”
I had to mule this one over some, but then it did come to make sense. “The Father did not love the disciples on the basis of their love for Jesus, but their love for Jesus was evidence of the Father’s love for them.”
Guzik put it like this: “A pulse doesn’t make the heart pump, but it is evidence of it. Our love for God doesn’t make him love us, but it is evidence that He loves us.”
One more thought, new situation in teaching (Holy Spirit) and new situation in the praying (In His name). After He returns to the Father.

A position to proclaim

John 16:29–30 NASB95
29 His disciples said, “Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not using a figure of speech. 30 “Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God.”
John 16:31–32 NASB95
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 “Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
John 16:33 NASB95
33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
In these verses, what sticks out to you?
What do the disciples realize and know according to (vv.29-30)?
He is speaking plainly
They believe He knows all things, and that He came from God.
We have another “hour is coming” what is going to happen in that hour according to (v.32)?
They would be scattered, they would leave him alone
Jesus would not be alone for the Father is with Him
What is Jesus offer, promise to them (v.33)?
Peace
Tribulation
Bonus question, why was the offer of peace being made available (v.33)?
Because Jesus has overcome the world!
I have limited time left tonight but want to cover this for we get to another great chapter next week.
They proclaim Jesus came from the father, that He knows all things, but yet they are going to scatter, have fear.
They were sincere, they thought they had it, understood it, but when it came to being tried, they scatter.
Their faith was going to be shaken before it was settled on Him, but in that day, that day was today! They were about to scatter, be shaken, and the settled would come when the Holy Spirit came.
Spurgeon says this: “There he stands. They have left him alone; but there he is, still standing to his purpose. He has come to save, and he will save. He has come to redeem, and he will redeem. He has come to overcome the world, and he will overcome it,”
This here ends the upper room discourse for now they will head to the garden.
In this closing verse
John 16:33 NLT
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
There is the offer of peace.
They had to receive the peace he is offering by finding it in Hi. We cannot find real peace outside of Christ for He is our peace.
He made the way of peace with God (Rom5:1)
He made the way of peace with others (Eph2:14)
“He offers peace which co-exists with tribulation and disturbances, a peace which is realized in and through conflict and struggle.” -Maclaren.
As a Christian, have you truly received the offer of peace? Many have not!
