Relationships: Honor Authority

1 Peter 2:11–13 ESV
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. 13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,
v. 11 - you dont belong here so dont pretend you do, dont get locked in, dont indulge in stuff that will try to harm your soul.
Have you ever thought about that you are an exile, you dont belong here?
This is what happens when you start following Jesus. Things that you used to love and need start to hold less value to you.
As you get closer to Christ, you start to feel like maybe you dont belong here.
What are some things in your daily life that try to harm your soul because you dont belong to this world?
1 Peter 2:13–16 ESV
13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
v.13 to 16 - Jesus effects the way you have relationships with the authority figures around you. Respect authority for the Lord.
Why is this so hard? to respect those authority over us?
our allegiance to authority in our lives speaks to our allegiance to the authority of God in our lives.
want to be careful because Daniel defied authority, others did too.
We obey in as long as it doesnt require us to disobey God.
Typically with people around you, who is the most rebellious to school authority or parents - kids that really seem to be following Jesus or ones that arent?
Why?
Because God said so, those close to God tend to obey him more.
Rejection of authority is a declaration of autonomy and soverignty
Does pride drive rebelliousness?
If so, what does the bible say about pride?
Can you think of anyone in the bible that had problems with authority because of their pride?
v. 18-21
We should be more concerned with the mission of God than our freedom (v12 sets the tone for the mission of God-bringing others to God)
1 Peter 2:12 ESV
12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
this is a crazy bold statement and shouldnt be taken lightly. We will see that in verse 18.
1 Peter 2:18–21 ESV
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
Does the bible support slavery? A kid at the fair asked me this.
My answer, nope. Wasnt sure what to tell the kid though. The article below is very helpful.
The bible didnt have 1800s US in mind when this was written, but its applicable.
https://answersingenesis.org/bible-history/the-bible-and-slavery/
So moving beyond the slavery discussion, he says Dont be suffering for your own bad behavior and call it godly suffering
Do you have any examples, without using names, of someone that suffered from their own stupidity?
But when you do the right thing and people still do you wrong, God sees that.
Honing in on verses 21 to 23
1 Peter 2:21–23 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
What are some implications for this?
Suffering is not a position of weakness. It takes a mighty powerful person to suffer for wrongdoing.
Who is the baddest person you know? real or fiction (maybe super hero)
do a picture list of “who would win in a fight”
For me its Jesus-is baddest man ever
Think about what he endured, wrongly, just because he was on a specific mission to provide salvation for you.
2. We have a trust issue here. Do you trust God enough to let him handle things?
end of verse 23
1 Peter 2:23 ESV
23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
3. This is not a mystery of what God wants or even if this applies to you. God is speaking clearly to his people here. He just said christians are a royal priesthood and in the family of God. Now he is saying that we are called to suffer when we people persecute us without cause.
1 Peter 2:21–25 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Christ died for you, to forgive you, to call you to submit to authority and to suffer for doing the right thing.
Think about what we are saying here.
Jesus Christ died for you so that you might be healed and saved.
Do you believe that?
Thats one part of Romans 10:9
What is the second part? To make Jesus lord of your life
What does it say after that? You will be saved. You are saved.
From the very get go, this thing is about throwing away your pride. You are not God. Jesus is.
Are you continually bucking authority and getting in trouble?
You need to make Jesus Lord of your life.
He gives you freedom to live in peace, not constantly needing to be god. Not constantly needing to buck authority
Did you do that this week? Who did you live for?
What do you want to do with your life?
Be faithful to Jesus or what you want to do?
