Introduction
We are in the season of giving thanks. We seem to hear it more this time of the year than any other. Many people are making lists of things for which they are grateful. Some are pausing to reflect on their blessings. I find myself thanking God for the opportunity to know Him. As we continue to study a Psalm for giving thanks, we open our Bibles to Psalm 100. We previously studied verses 1 and 2 last week. Let’s read together verses 1-3.
Psalm 100:1–3 NIV84
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
We can easily turn from just reading these verses to celebrating a time of worship! That first phrase of verse 3 gets me every time: “Know the Lord.”

Know the Lord

How do you know the Lord? Some may say, “I have known the Lord all my life.” Well it may be true that the Lord has certainly known you all your life, the Bible indicates that there is a time in which we live that is before we know the Lord.
1 Samuel 3:7 NIV84
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
However, the Lord made Himself known to Samuel. The Lord has ways to make Himself known to whomever He desires. Isaiah reminds us that He did so with the Egyptians. Isaiah 19:21
Isaiah 19:21 NIV84
21 So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge the Lord. They will worship with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the Lord and keep them.
There are many ways in which the Lord makes Himself known to us. For the purpose of our study today, we will mention three.
Through Creation
First, the Lord makes Himself known to us through creation. We have just experienced the beauty of God’s creation is the season of Fall. Thousands of people have come from all over these last few weeks to take in the majesty and glory of the Autumn colors here. It doesn’t take long to see the beauty of His creation in this area.
Romans 1:20 NIV84
20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
We can see the handiwork of God.
This summer, flying at 30,000 feet across the ocean, I had a TV screen on the seat in front of me as did everyone else. Through a camera system on that jet, I could see views from tail of the jet, below the jet and the view of what was out in front of the jet. It was fascinating to me to see as we were flying to the east over the Atlantic Ocean the brilliant colors. My heart turned to Psalm 19:1.
Psalm 19:1 NIV84
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Seeing that sunrise from that unique perspective still thrills my soul. These beautiful aspects of God’s creation will help me get to know Him, but I won’t know Him fully.
I can find God in other places. I can probably find Him best in His church.
Through Church
We are so fortunate to in this church where for almost 100 years the Gospel has been proclaimed and taught.
We have seen like many churches mentioned in the New Testament that faith was strengthened and people came to know God.
Acts 16:5 NIV84
5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.
We can certainly come to know about God through the church.
Don’t get me wrong, God’s plan for the church is to draw people to Him. However, if we want to know God, really know Him, we must know Him through Christ!
Through Christ
It is through Christ that we come to know God and are reconciled with Him.
Romans 5:1 NIV84
1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 Corinthians 5:18 NIV84
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
We can know the Lord and know Him through some extent through His creation and through His church. We come to know Him fully through Christ! Then we can know the Lord is God.
