On a Mission
the 12 have been with Jesus for about 18 months
they have learned by watching, listening, and asking questions
they have learned that Jesus has the power and authority to
heal the sickest of the sick
raise the dead
cast out all of the demons
calm the seas
now it is time for them to put into practice
Jesus is going to send them out in pairs all over Galilee
really this is another learning experience for them
to be able to trust in Jesus even though they are away from Him
Read Luke 9 1-9.

Power and authority
new car salesman has the power to sell a car
the manager has the authority to make the deal
the law gives the policeman has the power to stop you
and gives the authority to arrest you
I have the power to walk over to you and bop you in the nose
But I don’t have the authority
in fact the police have the authority to arrest me for that
Jesus gave to the disciples power and authority
the Holy Spirit was given to them for this mission
to do what ?
V 1 to preach the gospel
the same that they had seen Jesus do
to tell the good news
Their Messiah has come to redeem
The kingdom of heaven is here
to accept their Messiah
to put their faith in him
also
V 1 over demons and heal sickness
this was to authenticate the kingdom

this mission from Jesus is a unique mission
Go right away don’t take anything for supplies

some want to make this into the way of life for the christian
but this the way that our Lord wanted them to do it this time
Jesus wanted to teach a lesson about God’s supply
nothing teaches better than life
they had the account of the wilderness wanderings
God supplied food every day
supplied water from a rock on a couple of occasions
caused their clothing and sandals not to wear out in 40 years
but to leave home without any supplies and be provided for
is something a book cannot teach
also they needed to learn about the power of the Holy Spirit
V 4 to rely on the hospitality of others
V 5 learn rejection
we also can learn all about the Goodness of God to us
but to live it is a lesson not soon forgot
God is an infinite God who does not have to go into his books to find a good way to teach us a lesson
He has His own unique way every time
so we cant take the mission of the Apostles this time and make it into a pattern
V 6 the mission is a success

There was a great stir about this mission
V 7 Wondering what was going on
V 8 -9
who can this be? another John the Baptist
some were saying this and that
He wants to see Jesus but Jesus does not let him
He does see Jesus when Pilate sent Jesus to him
all he wanted Jesus to do was some miracle tricks
and again Jesus would not ablige
V 10 the apostles have returned
excitedly recounting their adventures
I think it gave them a taste for more
stepping out in faith in Jesus
proclaiming the gospel
seeing changed lives
seeing the provision from God for their mission
increased their faith
their trust in the Almighty
Then Jesus took them away for some rest.
we all need rest ....
Because before you know it V 11
Jesus sent them out on a mission
this mission they were not allowed to take any provisions
they were to do the impossible. cast out demons and heal
Jesus provided everything that was needed for this mission
the men needed to by faith go..
special powers and the authority to use them
when Jesus gives us a mission
He will give us everything He wants us to have
to accomplish the mission
these missions are also training missions to learn
to find out our weakness
we don’t have to wonder what our mission is
Go into all the world
love your neighbor as your self
bear each others burdens
use your gifts for the edification of the church
it is time to step out by faith and allow Jesus to work through you
