Psalm Reading

Psalm 59:14–17 ESV
Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. They wander about for food and growl if they do not get their fill. But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.

Why do people say they are a Christian and not go to church.
In Communion why do Catholic priests take a larger communion serving that the congregation. Is it because they think they have more grace from God?
During Communion Catholics use the gold cups and light candles is that holy? It kind of reminds me when demonic people try to raise someone from the dead.
Why does Song of Solomon have two names? (Song of Songs)

Reading

Peace with God through Faith
Romans 5:1–11 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Matthew 5:9 ESV
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

The Message and The Ministry

Greatest Activity of Peacemakers - Evangelism
We are Ambassadors
2 Corinthians 5:17–20 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
Firstly- 2 Cor 5:18
God ... “reconciled us to himself in Christ”
He dealt with the root cause of the problem
Romans 5:10 ESV
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Verse 1: “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”
Secondly - 2 Cor 5:19
God gave us the “ministry of reconciliation”

The Beatitudes for Today The Message and the Ministry

Writing about the work of the preacher, the well-known Methodist minister W E Sangster, who died in 1960, said this: ‘It is the sheer work of the herald who goes in the name of the King to the people who, either openly or by their indifference, deny their allegiance to their rightful Lord. He blows the trumpet and demands to be heard. He tells the people in plain words of the melting clemency of their offended King and the things that belong to their peace.’

It is not a task limited to full-time Christian Preachers
Acts 8:1 ESV
And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Acts 8:4 ESV
Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word.
All except the apostles were scattered
Professional preachers remained in Jerusalem
Non-preachers ‘gossiped the gospel’ as they went
The Beatitudes for Today The Message and the Ministry

In Michael Green’s words, ‘There is no hint among ancient records that the early church saw evangelism as the task of the leadership alone. It was too good to leave to the professionals.’

The Beatitudes for Today The Message and the Ministry

There is no greater means of bringing peace than by spreading the gospel, the good news that ‘God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself’

No surer way of breaking down the barriers of racem colour, culture and economics that seperate mankind from each other
Evangelism must not be compromised in the interests of achiveing some kind of success
The peacemaker who is true to Scripure will not dilute the message
Not an anaemic statement of easy believism - the notion all one has to do is believe that the gospel is true
The peacemaker will insist on genuine repentance and whole-hearted faith
giving full weight to Jesus’ warning...
Luke 14:26–27 ESV
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
Parable of the Great Banquet
Gave excuses why they could not attend

Family Likeness

Matthew 5:9 ESV
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Jews had contempt for Gentile Nations
They looked for a Messiah would lead them to military victory over their enemies
They sought to make Jesus King and hav him overthrow the Roman empire
This beatitude would have sounded as revolutionary as the others.
Jesus did not say “blessed are the warmonger” but “blessed are the peacemakers”
“Sons of God”
“Children” in AV implies one’s position
“Sons” places the emphasis on character and behaviour
Was a typical Jewish saying
Jesus gave names to James and John
Mark 3:17 ESV
James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder);
indicating their ardent and fiery natures
Fellow apostles gave Joseph the name Barnabas...
Acts 4:36 ESV
Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,
each name indicating a supportive nature
In calling peacemakers “Sons of God” Jesus says that they reflect God’s peacemaking character
The Beatitudes for Today Family Likeness

In J C Ryle’s words, ‘They are doing the very work which the Son of God began when he came to earth for the first time and which he will finish when he returns for the second time.’

breaking down barriers, easing tensions and seeking reconciliation
The Beatitudes for Today Family Likeness

R V G Tasker puts it, ‘The peacemakers are those who are at peace with God … and who show that they are truly children of God by striving to use every opportunity open to them to effect reconciliation between others who are at variance.’

Later in the sermon on the mount Jesus illustrates this principal.
Matthew 5:43–45 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
God does not discriminate between the godly and ungodly, and neither should we.
The Beatitudes for Today Family Likeness

Puritan preacher Richard Baxter went so far as to say, ‘He that is not a son of peace is not a son of God’

Peacemaking is a defining duty

Manifestation

Peacemakers will be “Called” sons of God
Romans 8:16 ESV
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Generations have tried to capture the warmth and depth of this experience, and none have improved on those of the Puritan preacher Thomas Goodwin (modernised)

‘There is a light which comes and overpowers a man’s soul and assures him that God is his, and he is God’s, and that God loves him from everlasting … It is a light beyond the light of ordinary faith … the next thing to heaven; you have no more, you can have no more, till you reach there … It is faith elevated and raised up above its ordinary rate, it is electing love of God brought home to the soul.’

Malachi 1:2 “I have loved you”
You cannot love God unless he first loved you
If you love God you can be assured He first Loved you

The Biblical Museum tells of a Birmingham man by the name of Dickinson who was commonly known as ‘the peacemaker’ and of whom this was said: ‘Such was his anxiety to keep the bonds of peace from being broken, such was his solicitude to heal the breach when made, that he would stoop to any act but that of meanness, make any sacrifice but that of principle, and endure any mode of treatment, not excepting even insult and reproach. From the high estimate in which his character was held, he was often called upon to act as umpire in cases of arbitration; and it was rarely, if ever, that the equity of his decisions was impeached.’

The record goes on to tell of two men arguing over a decision that had been made over a certain issue. As soon as they heard John Dickinson’s judgement on the matter their argument was over. We need a whole generation of John Dickinsons in today’s world!
As so often with the beatitudes, the final fulfillment of Jesus’ words comes not in the world but the next...
Romans 8:19 ESV
For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.
Romans 8:23 ESV
And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
The visible church on earth is a very mixed bag of
truth and error
the holy and the hyprocrits
the faithful and the formalists
the converted and the uncoverted
those trust in Christ and those trustin in their religion
A situation that had led to centuries of misunderstanding and conflict
The church in heaven will be vastly different
The identity of the “Sons of God” will be revealed
John reminded believers
1 John 3:1 ESV
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Our true identities is often blurred by our own moral and spiritual inconsistencies
Paul puts it this way, God will ...
Philippians 3:21 ESV
who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
John continues ...
1 John 3:2 ESV
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

C Ryle offers excellent advice: ‘Those who try to do good must look forward to the Day of Judgement with patience. They must be content in this present world to be misunderstood, misrepresented, vilified, slandered and abused. They must not cease to work because their motives are mistaken and their characters are fiercely assailed. They must remember that all will be set right at the last day. The secrets of all hearts will then be revealed. The purity of their intentions, the wisdom of their labours and the rightfulness of their cause shall at length be manifest to all the world.’

In today’s fallen world, the ture sons of God, however feebly, reflect something of their family likeness by the quality of their lives, not least in their concern to be preacemakes.
