Mission Focused

Theological Implications

[[SLIDE]]
Summary:
Everyone is born sinful
The wages of sin is death
Salvation through Jesus to those who believe
Abide is a mission church because these are theological convictions.
We really believe these things to be true and because of that we MUST do something about it.

Distinctive Implications

Some large categorical approaches to reaching people:

Professional Evangelism vs. Personal Evangelism

Monastery vs. Incarnational

Parachurch vs. Church Planting

Social Justice vs. Gospel Preaching

Seeker Friendly vs. Liturgical

Practical Implications

We are a “Jesus” church

(We want people to see that we are obsessed with Jesus)
(He is our greatest treasure, our deepest passion, and our only hope)
Ali story:
You guys are pretty similar.
The biggest difference that you guys talk about Jesus A LOT.

We are a “Holy Spirit” church

(We fully depend on the Holy Spirit in evangelism)
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Luke 12:11–12 ESV
And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Brandon Roth Story:
Sam Peterson… practically crying
Nothing from Brandon. Stone cold.

We are a “go” church

Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
John 20:21 ESV
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
We are a sent people...
If we’re not going, we’re not being obedient...
(We want to be proactive)
(We want to coordinate and organize our life to meet and genuinely connect to lost people)
We need to think of ourselves as missionaries.
(Think of a missionary to China)

The “Go” looks different for different people...

We are an “open” church

(We want our lives to be open to others)
(Sin, celebration, habits, parenting, “life on life”)
“Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.”

We are a “words” church

(Preaching, words are necessary)
Romans 10:13–15 ESV
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
You conduct should be aligned with your words...

We are a “sacrificial” church

(No one said mission would be easy. No one said mission would be cheap)
(Jesus said it count the cost, because it will cost you everything)
Luke 14:27–33 ESV
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Jesus gave more than anyone.
He is not asking you to give more than he gave.

We are a “church” church

(The vehicle of mission is the church)
Hebrews 10:24–25 ESV
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
1 Peter 2:9–10 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
You are a “people” and then there is Steve...

We are a “church planting” church

(Church planting drives mission and discipleship)
(Mission and discipleship drives church planting)

Do you have even one person that you are actively reaching with the gospel?

Random mission opportunities
vs
Intentional relationships

We Are Ambassadors

2 Corinthians 5:14–15 ESV
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
2 Corinthians 5:16–17 ESV
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:18–19 ESV
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:20–21 ESV
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
