Genesis 22

I love this story

Brief Background on Issac and Abraham

Here we have God offering a Ram / Lamb in replacement of the offering of Issac

But there are few things I would like to point out here

Some similarities between Isaac and that of Jesus

They are both Children of promise, miraculously conceived

Sarah was barren

But God promises Abraham he would have a child

Jesus was promised

and was a miracle because Mary was a Virgin

Issac and Jesus are both their Fathers Only sons

Just as Abraham offered up Issac, his one only son

God offered Jesus, his one and only son

Both are offered by their Fathers whom love them

Issac was being offered as a burnt offering

the faith of Abraham, he believed God would raise Issac

Jesus was offered as an atoning sacrifice for our sins

They are offered is sacrifice in the same place

Mt Moriah

This is the very palace that Solomon biult the temple

This would have been within 300 meters of where Jesus was crucified

Isaac and Jesus are to be a sacrificial lamb of God

When Isaac said, here is wood and fire but where is the lamb?

Abraham said that God would provide the lamb

instead we see that God ended up providing a Ram

But Abraham said lamb

See Abraham always knew there would be a lamb

Jesus even says in John 8:56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.””

And Jesus ended up being the sacrificial lamb that Abraham was talking about

Issac and Jesus both carried wood on their backs to die

Isaac and Jesus were both obedient to the fathers to the point of death

They were both willing V:9

Isaac could have fought back, Abraham was 100 years old

They both had a 3 day experiance

It was 3 days from when Abraham started up the mountain to when isaac was replaced by the Ram

Jesus was in the grave for 3 days

They both were around 33 years old at this point

Wrap it up

As we see, they have a lot in common, and Isaac has always been seen as a picture of Christ due to this very story

But when Isaac was rescued, he became the picture of us

Genesis 22:10–14 “Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He replied, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.” Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said, “It will be provided on the Lord’s mountain.””

Isaac was not sacrificed because one day Jesus Christ would be. God provided a substitute for Isaac, and He has provided a substitute for each of us in Jesus Christ. In Genesis 22:14, Abraham called this place of provision Jehovah-Jireh, meaning “The God who is sufficient; the God who will provide.” The Lord did provide; He provided Jesus as the ultimate, final sacrifice on this same mountain years later.

Exodus 12 - The passover Lamb

The pass over lamb was the animal used as a sacrifice in Egypt the night God struck down the first born sons of every household

Exodus 12:11–13 “Here is how you must eat it: You must be dressed for travel, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. You are to eat it in a hurry; it is the Lord’s Passover. “I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the Lord; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”

This was done so that the destroyer, would pass over the house

He told them, be ready to go as soon as the destroyer is done

Exodus 12:29 “Now at midnight the Lord struck every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and every firstborn of the livestock.” This was done so that the destroyer, would pass over the house

This the first passover marked the hebrews release from the Egyptian slavery

And the death of Christ, Our passover Lamb, marks the release of our slavery from sin

Isaiah 53 - The suffering Servant

The greatest and most famous of all messianic prophecies of the OT

Most Rabbis and Jews do not believe this to be about the messiah but most likely refers to Israel or to Isaiah himself

In fact, from what i recall they skip over this chapter when reading in the synoguauge

The whole chapter is about the suffering servant

But Isaiah 53:4–9 “Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was taken away because of oppression and judgment, and who considered his fate? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people’s rebellion. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully.”

We know this suffering servant to be Jesus

Revelation 7:14 Revelation 12:11 - The Tribulation saints and The Raging Dragon

Revelation 7:14 “I said to him, “Sir, you know.” Then he told me: These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

These ones are the faithful saints,

Possibly the martyrs

That is not the point,

the point is how are their robes made white with the blood of the lamb?

It is because the blood of the lamb

The blood of Christ is the worlds greatest purifier

Because it completely removes the stain of sin

white symbolizes sinless perfection or holiness

This can only be given to people by the death of the sinless lamb of God

Revelation 12:11 “They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; for they did not love their lives to the point of death.”

The dragon or satan comes to really mess things up

In rev 12 we have this awesome battle between the angels and the dragon

Michael and all his angels against satan and his fallen angels

It says they beat him and he was cast our of heaven

but verse 11 tells how they conquered him

by the blood of the lamb

This is how we conquer sin

By the blood of the lamb we are victorious

Not because anything we have done, but because Christ has done it all!
