Thanksgiving is Focused on God’s Goodness (7:36-50)

It is focused on the greatness of God’s mercy. Those who are impressed with their own worth and think they have little need of God’s grace and mercy will never be thankful!
The woman who anointed Jesus’ feet and washed them with her hair was focused on how much she had been forgiven by God, not how much she deserved.

Thanksgiving is Expressed in Praise (17:11-19)

It is expressed in praise to God! You cannot be thankful apart from worship, and you cannot truly worship without thanksgiving.
The man returned and gave praise and glory to God with a loud voice!
There is something that happens when we verbally express our gratitude to the Lord. It continues the joy cycle. We have received grace (charis) from God and our hearts are filled with joy (chara). Joy is expressed back to God in thanksgiving (eucharist).
Psalm 50:23 “The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!””
In fact, whenever one would come before God in the Old Testament it was with a gift and offer of thanksgiving.
Psalm 107:22 “And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!”
Psalm 100:4 “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!”

Thanksgiving is the Fruit of Faith

The ten men had faith to be healed, but one had saving faith. The kind of faith that recognized Jesus as Lord and worthy of worship!
He was made well = literally “your faith has saved you”. The same thing that was said to the sinful woman who was forgiven.
