“Faith is to believe what we do not see and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.”

Augustine of Hippo

“A faith that cannot survive collision with the truth is not worth many regrets.”

Arthur C. Clarke

“It is cynicism and fear that freeze life; it is faith that thaws it out, releases it, and sets it free.”

Harry Emerson Fosdick

“Belief is a truth held in the mind; faith is a fire in the heart.”

Joseph Newton

“Ultimately, faith is the only key to the universe. The final meaning of human existence, and the answers to the questions on which all our happiness depends cannot be found in any other way.”

Thomas Merton

“We must learn that to expect God to do everything while we do nothing is not faith, but superstition.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Doubt is not the opposite of faith; sin is the opposite of faith. Doubt is the place where we begin our faith journey with Christ toward God’s presence.”

Robert K. Pierce

“Do not fear doubt; God is there too.”

The Rev. Philip R. Taylor

“Belief requires no action; faith, defined as relationship with God, requires that we pray, study God’s word, proclaim the good news of Christ, wash the feet of the saints, love our enemies, turn the other cheek, care for the powerless, visit the prisoner, and more.”

The Rev. Philip R. Taylor

Comment:

Even a little faith will require that we do a lot. If we ask for more faith, we may not know that we are asking to be given much more to do. When we say, “increase our faith,” do we really know what we asking? Are we ready for more faith? What have we done with the little faith we have? It is so easy to say what we believe. It is so easy to say we have faith. The hard part is living what we believe. The hard part is living the faith we claim. What is faith? Where does it come from? Jesus says, “Just do it! A little dab will do you…just do it! Verna Dozier said, “We are not called to worship Jesus…we are called to follow Jesus.” Our faith is a reflection of our relationship with God. It is how the gospel is preached silently, everyday, as we walk with Jesus…as we follow Jesus. Our love for God…our love for our neighbor…our love for even our enemy is how our faith is proclaimed. Teresa of Avila said, “Christ has no body now but ours…no hands, no feet, or no eyes except ours.” We are the body of Christ…faith is the life-blood of that body…faith is active as God is active…the Christian life is not a spectator sport. We are to follow Jesus wherever he might lead us. Faith is an act of the will. Vicar Phil
