A Little Leaven

In first Corinthians (the whole book) I don’t think it’s any accident the layout of how it’s written
There’s sections and themes pointing toward what the church should look like
Paul covered a number of different issues related to both life and doctrine:
Divisions and quarrels,
Sexual immorality,
Lawsuits among believers,
Marriage and singleness,
Freedom in Christ,
Order in worship,
The significance of the Lord’s Supper,
Right use of spiritual gifts
UNITY AND PURITY IN THE CHURCH ARE THE KEY TO THE SUPERNATURAL
UNITY AND PURITY WITHIN OUR OWN LIFES
LAST WEEK:
ABHORING SIN
WHAT WE ALLOW IN THE CHURH AND WITHIN OURSELVES
COMPLACENCY EVENTUALLY LEADS TO COMPLIANCE WITH SIN
1 Corinthians 5:2 NKJV
2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.
Pride will cause us to gravitate towards our own understanding
what we think is right
what we think is ok
1 Corinthians 5:3 NKJV
3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed.
Judgment is for inside the church
The church should be held to a higher standard than the world
We should be partaking of a benefits in Christ
The benefits come with responsibility
If we want a higher standard of living, we must walk in a higher standard of sacrifice
We must fight like heaven to maintain it
1 Corinthians 5:4–5 NKJV
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
What he is telling them to do:
Prayerfully consider a confrontation (LOL)
I don’t think this was just a one time occurence with this guy
Confront Him he’s gone way to far
Deliver him unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh that his spirit may be saved
He’s saying Confront, Convict and Intervene
Relational confrontation
We have to love people enough that we’re willing to confront them
Hebrews 12 says whom the Lord loves he chastises
God is Love
Love is not Love
Usually we would rather have a relationship with someone, or have someone like us and them continue down a lifestyle of destruction, or even go to hell rather than confront so that their Spirit might be saved
Confrontation is a lot easier earlier than later
Delayed confrontation is multiplied
Here’s what I’m not saying: Make everyone mad at the dinner table this thanksgiving!
We also validate behavior that we put up with
This was a disciplinary action truth spoken in Love
Ephesians 4:11–15 NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—
Create a culture of Spiritual maturity
1 Corinthians 5:6 NKJV
6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
Your glorying is not good
You leaning on YOUR understanding isn’t good
Pride will poison everything it touches
A little Leaven, Leavens the whole Lump:
With very few exceptions in Jewish literature and the bible: leaven signifies an evil influence
A little bit of sin infects the whole body, a little bit of compromise becomes contagious
A little bit of pride
A little bit of our own understanding pollutes the well
Jewish passover:
Exodus 12:15 NKJV
15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.
Exodus 13:7 NKJV
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in all your quarters.
During this time is was not to even be in the house
They would light a candle and go looking for the leaven looking to carefully remove every trace of it from their house
Powdered substance, was something to be careful, handle it properly so it didn’t spill out and get into the house
Jewish passover is on April 15th
on the 14th
They still in remembering light candles and go about the action of removing the yeast from their houses
This is where we get the Spring cleaning from
Zephaniah 1:12 NKJV
12 “And it shall come to pass at that time That I will search Jerusalem with lamps, And punish the men Who are settled in complacency, Who say in their heart, ‘The Lord will not do good, Nor will He do evil.’
He’s looking for people who are settled in complacency
That term in Hebrew comes from the word:
Settled in their leer
Ka-Faw: meaning to thicken, congeal, settle or become dense
Dregs in the wine making process
crystalized particles that are unwanted
When we get mixed into the worlds sin
We can start to look and act like them and blend in
Eventually we settle to the bottom and become unwanted particles that need to be filtered out
Complacency will cause us to be come calloused to change in our life
I’m comfortable here
NLT says who are stagnant in spirit
I’m comfortable with my sin
I’m comfortable with my lifestyle
What will happen to those people?
Zephaniah 1:13 NKJV
13 Therefore their goods shall become booty, And their houses a desolation; They shall build houses, but not inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards, but not drink their wine.”
Everything they own will be up from grabs:
Their houses become desolation
They’ll do work and other people will reap the benefits
They’ll not be able to taste the fruit of the things they worked so hard to gain
The last remnant of evil should be plucked out of our lives:
pulling weeds that will try to choke the fruit out
become a vigilant gardner of your life
Infection in my foot
In order for us to help others:
We have to sweep our own houses first
Their is a purging in the body of Christ about ready to happen in this same manner
Discipline is no vengeful:
It’s for a purpose
It’s for prevention
It’s for a cure for the body
