Acts 2:38–39 HCSB
38 “Repent,” Peter said to them, “and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
A Personal Gift
1562 δωρεάν (dōrean): adv.; ≡ Str 1432; TDNT 2.167—1. LN 57.85 without cost, freely, free of charge, without payment (Mt 10:8(2×); Ro 3:24; 2Co 11:7; 2Th 3:8; Rev 21:6; 22:17+);
2. LN 89.20 for no reason (Jn 15:25+); 3. LN 89.63 for no purpose (Gal 2:21+)
The gift of the Holy Spirit is freely given, with out cost, free of charge, without payment. It is absolutely is free to the believer!
I want to go over three things that the Spirit does for you personally.
I. The Spirit works for you!
The spirit strengthens us and prays for us. Romans 8:26–27“26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
The spirit works things out for our good. Romans 8:28 “28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
The Spirit gives freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17“17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
The Spirit brings revelation. 1 Corinthians 2:9–12 “9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”
II. The Spirit Works in You!
The Spirit reveals in you the will of God and the will of the world. The spirit is the light of the father!
The spirit illuminates the life of the believer. We read in John 1:4–5 “4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
The light shineth in the darkness! We were born into sin. Sin is the powers of darkness. When the Spirit shines the light in our lives the darkness has to flee! Darkness can not comprehend the light.
The light is revealing! and when the Spirit lights up our life something begins to happen. The dark things, the secret places are revealed! The spirit begins his work in you in leadership guiding your way to truth and righteousness. When things are brought to light in our lives its at that point that we can deal with those things. The dark, hidden things are brought to light! This is called conviction!
We read in John 16:8 “8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” The word “Reprove” is to convict! The Holy Spirit in a sense is a truth detector! He begins to instruct you personally of the ways Holiness! When we fail, He implements grace for the believer. A grace that says, get up! Dust you knees off! and try again! What a mighty work the Spirit does in us personally!
We know through the spirit working in us that we are saved! Because the light has shined in us and has worked the work of faith with in us! We know through the spirit the works of faith as the bible says in James 2:18 “18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”
III. The Spirit Works Through You!
The fruit of the Spirit comes with the Spirit. According to the teaching of the bible, a saved person produces Fruit. The fruit of the spirit is the manifestation of the work or actions of the spirit!
The fruit of the spirit is manifested in the believer!
Galatians 5:22 KJV 1900
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
a)Love!
Gods love is seen through the work of the Spirit in the life of the believer!
b)Joy!
The gift of joy has been feely given and can be given freely through the life of the believer! A supernatural joy the over throws the weakening power of darkness in the world!
c)Peace!
Through the Spirit you can bring peace that surpasses all understanding to those around you that has found themselves chained up in anxiety and chaos through the cares of the world! James 3:18 “18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
d)Long-suffering, Gentleness and Goodness
2 Corinthians 6:6–10 “6 By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, 7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, 8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; 9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; 10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”
Faith!
Faith is a action word! Faith is not just believing in your mind and heart alone but allowing the Spirit to produce fruit from the life of faith!
The bible declares that through the gospel of salvation that the righteousness of God is revealed from Faith to Faith! and The Just Shall Live by Faith! Romans 1:17.
To be faithful means to allow the Spirit to operate for you!, In you!, and Through you! To walk in faith produces a life of fruit!
Through Gods Grace you have received the fruit of the spirit! The fruit is comes with the baptism of the Spirit!
The number 7 represents perfection or completion. The bible speaks of the seven spirits of God. There is not seven Spirits but one perfect and complete spirit of God!
I believe that we as believers can operate in complete leadership of the Spirit of God.
The seven spirits of God also represent seven gifts or works of faith. We read in Romans 12:6–8
“6 but having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: whether prophecy, in agreement with the faith; 7 or service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with generosity; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.”
