The mayor of the small Alaska village of Talkeetna isn’t exactly what most people expect, but residents say they are fine with their choice. Stubbs, a part-Manx cat, was elected mayor 15 years ago and still holds the honorary title. About the time the cat was born, the 900 residents of Talkeetna decided they didn’t like the candidates vying for mayor, so they decided to put Stubbs on the ballot as a write-in candidate. He won the election and that put the town on the map. The people of the village say they are happy with the job Stubbs does to promote tourism. He doesn’t have a desk, computer, or phone; he spends his days at the general store where tourists often stop and ask to see him.–Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell
