Introduction
Today, we are going to dive into the deep end of the pool- the pool, metaphorically speaking, being the subject of Islam. Before we begin, I want to be very clear about what this lecture is- an is NOT- about.
My lecture will be focused on the ideology of Islam- not upon Muslims, the adherents of said ideology.
This is NOT about arming you to win an argument, but arming you to win a soul.
This lecture will cover the following:
The foundational doctrines of Islam
A comparison & contrast of Islam vs. Christianity ("Christianity and Islam: What You Need to Know")
An apologetic response to Muslims: suggested approaches to sharing the Gospel
After all 3 sctions of this lecture are complete, we will spend 20-30 minutes in Q&A, so take notes and prepare your questions.
Comparisons
Sacred texts (Bible v. Koran/Hadith/Sira)
Key figure (Jesus v. Mohammed)
Prosteletizing (Evangelism v. dowah)
Differences
Salvation (soteriology)- savation through works not faith. Jesus did not die for our sins in Islam
Allah v. Yahweh (trinity v. mono)
Jesus was sinless; Mohammed was not. J. performed miracles; M. only miracle was the Quran
Koran v. Bible (discuss deleopment, canonization, order of chapters; written in Arabic butpassed by oral tradition before Arabic was the “Quranic dilemma”)
View of violence (Crusades v. Jihad, view of violence in sacred texts of both)
Hermeneutics of sacred texts (Biblical catagories of writings, i.e. history, poetry, etc. v. Koran, only prohetic; 40 authors v. 1 author; claims of inerrancy not tied to perfect manuscripts for Bible, recent scolarship on Koran is “problematic”; no contradictions in Bible, multiple contraditions in Koran, requiring the “doctrine of abrogation”)
Life of Muhammad- the key to understanding Islam
(review his revelation from Gabriel, 13 years preaching in Mecca- only 150 convrts, mostly his family; migrated (called the hidra) to Medina becoming a warlord & politician. when he died, every Arab was a muslim. This is why the Islamic calander starts with the Hidra- not his birth, or the anniversary of his revelation.
Summary of M’s life: he was a preacher for 13 years, a politician & military leader for 10 years, who averaged an act of violent jihad every 6 1/2 weeks for the last 9 years of his life, expelling, “ending” or converting every person until only muslims were left in the Arabian penisula.
Through battles after his death jihad, his final order), Islam expanded throughout the Middle East, North Africa and Europe- stopping at the gates of Vienna on Sept 11th, 1683. Yes, this means that the attack on 8/11/01 was not a coincedence.
Definitions Salaat: The ritual prayers that Muslims recite five times a day Wudhu: Ceremonial washing before salaat Fajr: The first of the five daily prayers offered by Muslims Du’aa: A prayer offered before meals Muhammad: The prophet of Islam who received the final revelation of God and passed it on to Muslims Muslim: One who submits Islam: Submission Sharia: Islamic law that guides how a Muslim should live to submit to Allah Hadith and Sunnah: The Islamic traditions of what Muhammad said and did Quran: The holy scriptures of Muslims Imam: A leader of Muslims, usually referring to one who leads prayer at a mosque Sunni and Shia: The two major branches of Islam Shahada: The central proclamation of Islam: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger”“
Stats
How many Mulsims are there in the US? A Pew Forum survey indicated that in 2011, there were 2.6 million Muslims in the United States, or .8 percent of the population. That percentage is projected to grow by the year 2030 to approximately 1.7 percent, or one out of every fifty people.
How many Muslims are there in the world? The global statistics are much higher. There are 1.61 billion Muslims around the world today. That is a quarter of the world’s population.
How many Christians are there in the US? The 2012 Pew Forum survey showed that there are 243 million Christians in the United States, or 78 percent of the population.
How many Christians are there in the world? Globally, there are 2.2 billion Christians, which is 32 percent of the world’s population.” Excerpt From: Qureshi, Nabeel. “Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus Study Guide.” Zondervan, 2016-03-01. iBooks. This material may be protected by copyright.
Islam & Slavery “The full history of slavery is not taught in any university in the United States. Nor is it easy to find books written that include the fact of Islam’s role in world slavery. The only acceptable history of slavery is the one where white men went into Afria and brought blacks to the US and other countries by boat. 200 year white man It was the white man who actually did the most to stop the international slave trade. The British Navy was commanded to intercept all slave ships. This did not stop the Islamic enslavement of Africans. Out of the 25 million slaves that were taken out of Africa, 11 million were sold in the Americas. The other 14 million were sold in West and North Africa, where Islam is, and in the rest of Asia. There was a terrible side effect of slavery. For every slave captured, the slavers had to kill others. For instance, Francis Bok’s parents were killed. The slavers showed up with armed troops, and killed all those who could defend their tribe. When the slavers finally killed all the defenders, they could then take the best of the survivors as slaves. The old, the sick and the very young were left behind, because they couldn’t take the forced march that comes right after capture. The estimate of the collateral damage from taking one slave varies. Some of those who visited Africa during the peak slave trading days said that as many as ten had to die to produce one slave in the wholesale market. Others said no, only five. So using the lower figure we can see that out of the 25 million enslaved, there were over 100 million Africans, as much as 120 million Africans, who have died over the 1400 year period and that includes today. These figures never get talked about.” Excerpt From: Warner, Bill. “A Self-Study Course on Political Islam, Level 1.” CSPI, LLC., 2011-06-23T05:00:00+00:00. iBooks.
