Prophecy (Isa. - Mal.)

NT

Gospels (Matt.-John)

The Relational Book

The Law

The first five books of the Bible lay the foundation for the coming Christ: Genesis (election of the Seed); Exodus (redemption from slavery); Leviticus (santification through the sanctuary); Numbers (He gives direction) and Deuteronomy (He gives instructions to His people)

The History

In order for Christ the King to come through the chosen nation the kingdom had to be formed: Joshua (he took possession of the land) and because the people disobeyed in the book of Judges we witness the oppression of the nation by enemy forces.

Poetry

In their suffering the Israelites expressed their need for a mediator: in Psalm they seeked communion with God; in Job someone to explain their trials; in Proverbs they aspired for wisdom; and in the Song of Sol. the longing for union in love

Prophecy

The writings of the prophets kept alive the expectation of the coming messiah.
Themes:
National restoration (Hosea, Joel and Amos)
Salvation through Christ (Isaiah & Micah)
Retribution of the wicked (Obadiah, Jonah, Nahum etc.)
Glorious restoration (Ezekiel)
Political destination (Daniel)
Moral reconstruction (Malachi)

Gospel

“The anticipation of Christ in the Old Testament became the realization of Christin the New Testament”— Norman L. Geisler

The Fourfold Manifestation

Matthew - He came as King of the Jews
Mark - He came as a Servant to the Romans
Luke - He came as a man to the Greeks

Christ in the Psalm

Ministry

Psalm 69:9 (ESV)
For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
John 2:17 (ESV)
His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Betrayal

Psalm 41:9 (ESV)
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.
John 13:18 (ESV)
I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’

Crucifixion

Psalm 22:18 (ESV)
they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
John 19:24 (ESV)
so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,

Conclusion

Are You Satisfied?

Ecclesiastes 1:1–11 ESV
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again. All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

Jesus Satisfies

Luke 6:21 (ESV)
“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
