Notes & Transcripts

When Florida authorities arrested 49-year-old Jeffrey Hawkins on charges of trespassing, they expected him to say very little for his own protection. Instead, Hawkins waved his right to right to remain silent and began talking about his fraudulent use of credit cards saying he was “sick of running.” Police discovered the man had spent the last 20 years traveling the country, staying in hotels and living off stolen credit card information. Hawkins told authorities he had been homeless and jobless since the 1990s and first began committing credit card fraud by writing down numbers he saw or overhead. He had over 100 different numbers with him when he was arrested, and receipts indicating he had traveled up and down the East Coast doing the same thing. When asked about Hawkins exploits, a resident of Orlando summed up his feelings saying, “Obviously he’s a pretty smart guy. He should have found something legal to do.”— Jim L.
