Titus: Preparing the church for the future

Notes
Transcript
Titus 1:10–16 KJV 1900
For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Characteristics of Corrupt Teachers

Rebellious
anypotaktoi: insubordinate - disposed to or engaged in defiance of established authority.
This indicates that the unruly ones were within the church.
1 Samuel 15:23 KJV 1900
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, He hath also rejected thee from being king.
Proverbs 17:11 KJV 1900
An evil man seeketh only rebellion: Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
Big Talkers
Proverbs 10:19 KJV 1900
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: But he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Deceivers
Romans 16:18 KJV 1900
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
2 Corinthians 11:13 KJV 1900
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
For Paul and Titus the individuals that caused the most chaos were identified as “of the circumcision.”
Ephesians 2:11 KJV 1900
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
In our day we should identify any who subvert the truth of the simple Gospel message with humanism or any gospel which is no gospel.

Fruit of Corrupt Teachers

Ruined Homes
Anatrepousin: to ruin, overturn, conceived of as overturning something from an upright or normal position.
2 Timothy 3:6 KJV 1900
For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
God’s plan for the home
Ephesians 5:21–6:4 KJV 1900
Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
1, 2 Timothy, Titus 3. The Need for Qualified Church Leadership (1:10–16)

Paul quoted Epimenides, a well-known and highly esteemed sixth-century Cretan philosopher. The line, which offers an unflattering assessment of the Cretan character, is introduced by Paul in a direct manner to emphasize its source to be none other than a revered Cretan: “Even one of their own prophets has said, ‘Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.’ ” Paul

Life run by lies
1 John 1:8 KJV 1900
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 2:4 KJV 1900
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
2 Thessalonians 2:10–12 KJV 1900
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
John 8:44 KJV 1900
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
The Greek world had a saying “to cretize.” This was used to express lying or cheating.
Neglect of Moral Conscience
Romans 2:14–15 KJV 1900
For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
Hebrews 10:22 KJV 1900
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Self indulgent
2 Peter 1:8 KJV 1900
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3:19 KJV 1900
Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

Comparison of Believers and Unbelievers

Romans 14:20 KJV 1900
For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
Acts 10:15 KJV 1900
And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Romans 14:23 KJV 1900
And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
