John the Baptist came into the world telling of a new at the time method of reconciliation with God and baptizing people to prepare them for the salvation that would come through Jesus Christ. This message is not about preparing yourself for Christmas. As one who already follows Christ, this message is about being the one preparing unbelievers for the Gospel. Christmas time (and Easter) is your best opportunity to share the Gospel as so much focus is put on Him around the world.
