God the Son or the Son of God?
Does the NT call Jesus the son of God, or God the Son?
Luke 3:38 NKJV
38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Who is Man?

Gen 1 tells the story of creation
created together in the image of God and both blessed.
Both given dominion over created things
Both told to be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth.
Given every herb bearing seed, and every tree on the face of the earth is theirs for the taking without qualification; they have dominion over all.
God looks at his creation and declares it very good.
Gen 2 is a retelling, a zeroing in on the on the most important details of Gen 1.
much of what was presented in Ch 1 is reexamined.
Man is made of the dust of the ground - without the woman
Adam looks and finds no help meet.
Eve is created separately from a rib.
No mention of the dominion or authority
God plants a garden and commands Adam to dress it and to keep it.
Man is now a steward of God’s things
Furthermore, the man is told that not every tree belongs to him.
There is one tree that he may not eat from, and if he does he will surely die.
While in Chapter 1 God declares everything good....
In Chapter 2 there is one thing God declares is not good.
“It is not good that man should be alone”
Lofty language in the first chapter - blessed, dominion and authority, the world belongs to them.
IN the 2nd chapter man is charged with submission. Not said to be blessed. Made of the dust of the ground. Made steward of the garden and his is alone.
Adam is in many ways a divided man!
There is a template of comparison and contrast used throughout the Bible for Adam and Jesus.
In understanding something about Adam - more is revealed about the ministry Jesus Christ.
Adamic Christology - This approach to the study of scripture.
Two Clashing Identities:
Man made in the image of God
Man the author of sin
No repentance is ever recorded of Adam or Eve - Only blame.... even of God....
Insubordination
Romans 5:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
1 Corinthians 15:21 NKJV
21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.

The Problem of the Firstborn

Colossians 1:14–15 NKJV
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
Pre-eminence
Romans 5:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Genesis 4:1–5 NKJV
1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
Blessing passed on to the next born, Enoch.
Abraham
Sarah
Maid Servant - Hagar
Ishmael - Birth was an act of man’s will.
Isaac
Genesis 17:20–21 NKJV
20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”
Take they sone, thine only sone Isaac...” When God speaks of Abrahams decendants Ishmael is not considered.
Isaac Has Two Sons
Esau and Jacob
Aaron and Moses
David the youngest.
Favor found in the youngest while the firstborn is flawed....!
Adam
Cain/Abel
Ishmael/Isaac
Esau/Jacob
Reuben/Joseph and Benjamin
Manasseh/Ephraem
Aaron/Moses
Eliab/David
Amnon/Solomon
Why did Paul call Jesus, “The firstborn of every creature”?
There is a new firstborn!
Romans 5:12–14 NKJV
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Romans 5:15 NKJV
15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.
Romans 5:17 NKJV
17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
The first man Adam’s sin was fundamental disobedience
Being a man - tried to make himself God
Lack of submission to God.
When Jesus came, His beginnings were humble.
Dominion - through - submission is the message of Jesus to His disciples!
It is the message repeated by the early church.
Jesus set right - what Adam messed up!
When grace changes the heart, submission out of fear changes to submission out of love, and true humility is born.
—William Hendriksen, Exposition of Philippians
William Hendriksen
Contemporary society … does not value personal submission. Rather, it teaches that the ideal, the highest position a human being can attain, is that of personal autonomy.
STEPHEN B. CLARK,
MAN AND WOMAN IN CHRIST
Stephen B. Clark
Instead, God relied on the very same model that Jesus used to resist the sinful longings of His flesh. He gave us His Spirit to dwell in us and help us live in humble submission.
Steven Runge
Living in submission to what God commands is the essence of faith.

The greatness of a man’s power is the measure of his surrender.

We shall discover that the secret of Joshua’s victories was not his skill with the sword but his submission to the Word of God (Josh. 1:8) and to the God of the Word (5:13–15).
Warren W. Wiersbe
The important thing is the posture of the heart. It is much easier to bow the knees than to bow the heart in submission to God.
Warren W. Wiersbe
Submission is an act of faith.
Warren W. Wiersbe
6414 Independence is not strength but unrealized weakness and is the very essence of sin. There was no independence in our Lord, the great characteristic of his life was submission to his Father.
Oswald Chambers
The essence of sin is arrogance; the essence of salvation is submission.
Alan Redpath
The authority and submission in each of these cases is based on love, not tyranny.
John F. MacArthur
Should have used This:
1 Corinthians 15:45–58 NKJV
And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
