Luke 10:25–37 (NKJV)
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
Pray
Well, we’re now into our second week of Church Revolution. What I hope to do during this series is stir you up. I want to get you pumped up for Jesus, for his church, and for his mission! I want to try and debunk the idea that being a Christian is just going through the motions.
There is a song called , “The Motions”?
It was written by Matthew West, who was facing some medical uncertainty. The prospect of his medical condition led him to think about his life. And here are some of the words he wrote:
This might hurt, it's not safe But I know that I've gotta make a change I don't care if I break At least I'll be feeling something 'Cause just okay is not enough Help me fight through the nothingness of life I don't wanna go through the motions I don't wanna go one more day Without Your all consuming passion inside of me I don't wanna spend my whole life asking What if I had given everything Instead of going through the motions? No regrets, not this time I'm gonna let my heart defeat my mind Let Your love make me whole I think I'm finally feeling something 'Cause just okay is not enough Help me fight through the nothingness of this life
Sounds like a man tired of just playing around. Sounds like a man who’s tired of playing at church. Tired of playing at life.
Sounds like a man who needs a change one who needs a church revolution! Do you feel it?
Do you feel like life is just a burden, something we endure? Are you tired of going through the motions?
Then you’re a prime candidate for a church revolution! Last week we talked about the difference between an uprising and a revolution.
An uprising has no heart and eventually ends when the going gets tough. an either complete falling away or one who just becomes completly apathetic to wards God his Word and His church
But A revolution is all about the heart and one caught by the heart of a revolution will to go with Jesus, no matter what
Because Jesus is leading the revolution, and we have nowhere else to go for real life change;
“He has the words of life”, we sell all out for Him.
That’s the root of revolution
But many of the battles of church revolution takes place in our heart. And we’re going to fight one of those battles today.
The verse I quoted earlier is from a conversation Jesus had with an expert in religious lawyer
Read Luke 10:25–29
Luke 10:25–29 (NKJV)
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
The Story. Here’s a smarty pants religious Bible expert trying to pin down Jesus.
He asks Jesus “What should I do to inherit eternal life?” Ever notice it’s always about “me” with religious folks? So Jesus asks him a question, “What do you think it takes? What’s the Bible say?” So the Religious expert says … (Read verse 27).
Luke 10:27 (NKJV)
So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
Jesus says, “Right, now go do it.”
If you love God you’ll love His Son sent to save the world.
That trust and love of Jesus is the way to eternal life.
But the religious dude doesn’t seem too interested in loving God.
Because He’s not. Only Himself
He’s trying to catch Jesus and discredit Him. So the religious dude baits Jesus more,
“And who is my neighbor?” as if he can weasel out of it
So Jesus tells him a little story to bring this neighbor question home for him. The story Jesus tells
A man gets mugged and beat up. The muggers leave him on the side of the road for dead. But wait! Here comes help. Or is it?
A priest and then a Temple Assistant (a Levite) comes alone. Surely these religious people will stop and help him, won’t they?
After all, they represent God, don’t they? They know the Bible. But, what happens?
They must have been in a hurry to get somewhere. They had a business meeting to get to at the Temple.
They had a big sermon to deliver in front of hundreds and this guy would just be a delay.
They were too busy, too hurried, or I think it really boiled down to this. They just didn’t care!
But then this Samaritan shows up. A hated, half-breed, no-good, Samaritan. yes there was a bit of racism against the Samaritan
But look at him. look at this man of Love
He bandages the mugged man up, puts him in his car, drives him to the motel, and pays.
this wasn't a friend this wasn't family this was a stranger
He was a religious nobody, he was just an everyday person with a heart.
Jesus says “That’s your neighbor and that’s how you love him.”
Now Go and do it.” Go look for the people suffering and love them and help them.“Go look for the people who have little and love them and help them.” “Go look for the people who are struggling and love them and help them.”
Read 1 John 3:17
1 John 3:17 (NKJV)
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
explain
For us to start a Church Revolution,
1. The first battle that must be won is with our HEART.
It’s sad to say, but so many of us church folks must be directly related to those religious people that just walked by.
We argue over doctrine with each other. what church we go to what family we belong ect.
We’ll travel 100 miles to go hear somebody tell us the latest Christian “self-help.”’
We listen to radio stations that tell us the president, the government, and everybody else that don’t agree with us are the enemies.
And we walk right through the lives of people that’s been mugged and needing help.
We discount those not like us and walk right through, as if they didn’t exist.
We too busy arguing over what the church is that we have no time for what the church is called to do.
And one of them is “Love our neighbors, the ones around us needing help.”
The Church Revolution will begin when we let God change our hearts!
When we start seeing people the way Jesus sees people.
Jesus loves those people enough to die for them, and He wants you to love them, too. So we need the revolution to start in our hearts.
Pray Lord, change our hearts!
Lord, let us love the castaways, the misfits, those who are desperate for help! So, we’re going to give you a tool to exercise your heart.
With the new year, around the corner we will be entering our third year as me as the Pastor of the church here
We have had some bumps along the way some old faces leave some new faces join us financially things have been tight. But I believe God is going help us we trust in his providence over all things I believe that the members of a church will continue give to support the church they love.
My faith in Jesus and you are so strong, that we’re going to do something crazy today
I'm going to ask that we take this week’s offering, and giving it back to you. or lets say you keep it.
The only catch is you cannot keep it for yourself. Not for your debt not for the new shoes not for your vacation Not extra money for presents , no not for yourself at all
You’ve got to give it away to someone who needs it more.
If you feel you must give to the church you will find the boxes in the hallway you can leave it there, or you can do so from our website.
But I want you to Go and Do it
Be the Doers of His Word
So that means you’ve got to find those people in desperate need.
I'm thankful for all those who have stepped up this week i know its been a hard week, remember a uprising is just a moment that fires up the church when it cuts into time people fall out
a revolution on the other hand has people in the battle willingly wanting to serve Christ for their love of Christ and their neighbors.
The revolution begins with the battle of the heart.
Here’s a chance to go with your heart.
Here’s a chance to exercise a heart renewed by Jesus!
Here’s your chance for you to “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Let us pray
Lord Change our hearts help us to be more like you help us to love as you do help us to become more selfless and less selfish
