Up On The Mountain

On the Mount of Transfiguration
Peter James and John saw the Glorified Jesus
They saw God
they got a glimpse of eternity
Lets build booths for us to stay here
but there was no staying on the mountain
V 36 they kept silent
on the mountain they experienced eternity
Now they have to come down
the first thing they encounter is evil
a demon possessed boy
a worried father
V 37-42
the disciples were not able to do anything about the demon
there are a few things that Luke did not share
like the reason that the 9 could not throw out the demon
Matthew 17:20 LSB
And He said to them, “Because of your little faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
the fathers small faith
Mark 9:24 LSB
Immediately the boy’s father cried out and was saying, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”
the scribes arguing with the Apostles
Mark 9:14 LSB
And when they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.
Luke has nothing to tell us about faith
and prayer and fasting
So, what does Luke tell us that the other accounts do not?
Lets read Luke 9 37-45.

God’s Sovereignty

before we look at what Luke has for us lets look at some verses that displays the Sovereignty of God
Samuel’s mother
1 Samuel 1:5 (LSB)
but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had closed her womb.
Eli’s evil sons
1 Samuel 2:25 (LSB)
“If one man sins against another, God will mediate for him; but if a man sins against Yahweh, who can pray for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for Yahweh desired to put them to death.
God speaking to Samuel
1 Samuel 2:34–35 (LSB)
‘Now this will be the sign to you which will come concerning your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: on the same day both of them will be put to death.
‘But I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and in My soul; and I will build him a faithful house, and he will walk before My anointed always.
Saul against David
1 Samuel 23:14 (LSB)
And David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds and remained in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.
Again
1 Samuel 26:12 (LSB)
So David took the spear and the jug of water from beside Saul’s head, and they went away, but no one saw or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a sound sleep from Yahweh had fallen on them.
Absalom against David
2 Samuel 17:14 (LSB)
Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For Yahweh had ordained to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that Yahweh might bring calamity on Absalom.
Shammah My favorite verses
2 Samuel 23:11–12 (LSB)
Now after him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered into a troop where there was a portion of the field full of lentils; and the people fled from before the Philistines.
But he took his stand in the midst of that portion and delivered it and struck down the Philistines. So Yahweh brought about a great salvation.
Romans 9:5–14 (LSB)
God is sovereign over what is going on in this world
now that we have looked a little at this.
let us look at what Luke says about this account

Concealed From Them

V 41 the unbelieving wicked and perverse
V 43 they were astounded at the miracle
giving glory to the Father forgetting it was Jesus
Not giving credit to the messiah
But V 43
Jesus was going to say something more important
more important than healing or demon casting
V 44 the Messiah will be delivered
who will be doing the delivering?
God the Father will
nothing can happen without the Fathers pre-ordination
V 45
they did not understand
concealed from them
Who did the concealing?
God kept them from understanding and asking
why? it does not say why god would cause the disciples to hear something from Jesus but not comprehend it
but this we do know
John 14:26 LSB
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
what Jesus said to them was for another time
they needed to know later that what happened was the Doing of God
they needed to know that this was always a plan of God
that Jesus would be a redeemer
and that He would need to die
because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins
there also will be a time when the sign gifts would start to go away
the healings, miracles, prophecy
and the Apostles will remember this encounter with this man
the unbelief of the people
even after the healings and the miracles
the most important thing is the Death burial and resurrection of the redeemer.
these things will be brought back to mind
Oh yeah Jesus did say that He would be handed over
now I get it
God’s sovereignty is in such control in this world that even words spoken to us we may not understand because the meaning is concealed from us by God.
but when the time is right the Holy Spirit brings the words and the meaning to us
that is why we are to plant seeds of the gospel
God’s sovereignty is in such control in this world that even words spoken to us we may not understand because the meaning is concealed
and then when the time is right for God to save this person
the words and the meaning will flood their minds and heart
they will repent and believe the gospel message.
