Introduction

Read Matthew 1:18-20.
When a child is born into this world, most times there are few people who can describe that new babe better than the mother that birthed him.
As the mother nurtures her baby, she soon memorizes every feature of that little face. She might notice how the baby favors the father or mother or even other siblings. She might notice how some features are unique to that baby and different from the rest of the family. With time, the mother will notice the sounds, the likes and the dislikes that are characteristic of that baby.
I’m sure that Mary spent many hours gazing into the face of her newborn baby, knowing that He was the Messiah. I’m sure that she was able to describe his features better than anyone else could. I’m sure that Mary knew her baby boy very well, even beyond his physical appearance, but I submit to you that we find in our text another description that is even better than Mary’s. We find another description that reveals far more about Him than His outward appearance. We find the divine description of Jesus.
In Matthew chapter one, an angel, a messenger of God, appears to Joseph in a dream and describes the little baby that was in Mary’s womb.
In Luke chapter one, an angel named Gabriel is sent from God unto Mary. That angel also provided a description of the son that she would bare.
These angels brought the divine description of Jesus. They didn’t bring their own message; as heralds, they brought God’s description of His own Son. No matter how much or how little you know about Jesus Christ, you must hear and believe what was said about Jesus by these messengers of God.

He was conceived of the Holy Ghost - Matthew 1:20.
When the angel appeared to Joseph, the first description that he shared was that Jesus was miraculously conceived.
In Judaism, when a young man wanted to marry a young woman, he would meet with her father, pay her father a sum of money, and then make a promise, a covenant with the young woman. At that point, they were legally married, but they were not ready to start their lives together yet. The young man would go and build a home for her, often taking a year to prepare. Meanwhile, the young woman would wait and prepare for her new life of marriage. That was Joseph and Mary. They were not living together yet, so when Joseph heard that Mary was pregnant, he thought that she had been unfaithful. He was thinking about quietly divorcing her.
The conception of Jesus Christ was miraculous and altogether unique. Matthew declared that it was the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 7:14.
Isaiah 7:14 KJV 1900
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.
Obviously, this fact was of great importance to Joseph because the angel proved to him that Mary had not been unfaithful after all! But this fact is of vital importance to us too for this reason: it shows that Jesus truly is one of a kind! There is no one else like Him! There is no one else that God’s messengers have described this way! With such a conception, it is not possible that He was merely a good man! He cannot be just a teacher or a prophet! No such comparison can be made to the One who had such an incomparable birth.
Larry King, author, radio, and TV show host, once said, ”I would like to ask Him if He was indeed virgin born, because the answer to that question would define history." - Larry King
Application: Do you believe that He was born of a virgin? I’m not asking if you completely understand it. You can’t. No human can fully comprehend Him, but you must believe Him. He was conceived of the Holy Ghost. That was the first description that the messengers of God brought to Joseph.

He is great - Luke 1:32.
Read Luke 1:30-32.
God sent a messenger to Mary and the first way that he described Jesus to her was that Jesus would be great. Her child would be great with man and with God! This has been the testimony of men down through the centuries.
I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creation of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him. - Napoleon
I am an historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history. - H.G. Wells
As the centuries pass, the evidence is accumulating that, measured by His effect on history. Jesus is the most influential life ever lived on this planet. - Historian Kenneth Scott Latourette
God has promised that there is one name at which every knee will bow. There is one name that every human being will confess is Lord: the name of Jesus.
Philippians 2:10 KJV 1900
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Application: Men, angels, and most of all, the Scriptures all testify that the greatness of Jesus Christ is unparalleled, but how great is He to you? What is His greatness in your estimation? You cannot believe that He is great and your life remain unchanged. He said, “if you love me, keep my commandments.” His greatness demands your obedience.

He is the Son of the Highest/the Son of God - Luke 1:32, 35.
There are some today like the Jehovah’s Witness who would teach that this title of Jesus means that He is less than God, but that is not how it was understood in Judaism. The Jews understood this title to mean that Jesus is God - and they attempted to stone him for it.
In John chapter ten, Jesus was in the Temple and the Jews asked Him who He was.
John 10:23–24 KJV 1900
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch. Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
Jesus answered them and they listened until He said these words:
John 10:30 KJV 1900
I and my Father are one.
John 10:31–33 KJV 1900
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Application: The description of Jesus that God gave to His messengers was that Jesus is the very Son of God. Jesus is God and He was crucified because of it. Sinful man could not accept the presence of sinless God. Darkness could not remain in the presence of light.
Do you believe God’s description of His own Son? Do you believe that He is indeed the Son of God?
In Matthew 16:15, Jesus asked His own disciples, “But whom say ye that I am?”
Matthew 16:16 KJV 1900
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
My prayer is that every single person in this room would be able to give that answer!

He is the heir to the throne of David - Luke 1:32.
It was prophesied in the Old Testament that David would have an heir who would remain upon the throne of Israel.
Psalm 132:11 KJV 1900
The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; He will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
Matthew chapter one outlines the genealogy whereby Jesus was an heir the throne. From Abraham to David and from David to Joseph, Matthew traces Jesus’ right to the throne. Joseph was not Jesus’ physical father, but he was Jesus’ legal father. Through Joseph’s line Jesus had every right to the throne of David.
Application: Christian, just as Jesus has every right to the throne of David, He has every right to the throne of your heart. He has redeemed you with the price of His own blood. He shed it all for you, but He doesn’t force you to serve Him. It must be your choice. So I challenge you, surrender your life to His will because he has every right to use your life for His glory.

He is a king forever - Luke 1:33.
The angel assured Mary that her Son would sit upon the throne of David and even more, His reign would be forever. His kingdom would never end! This was God’s plan and it was sure to happen because God promised that it would!
Psalm 89:35–36 KJV 1900
Once have I sworn by my holiness That I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, And his throne as the sun before me.
Revelation 11:15 KJV 1900
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
Application: Hear how God’s messengers described Jesus to the one who would be His mother! Listen as they describe Jesus as a king who would reign forever! God’s plan for His Son is without question! That will happen! But what remains in question is whether you will bow the knee to Him today or whether you will bow the knee in eternity. Have you submitted your life to King Jesus? That’s not a made-up title! That’s how God describes Him! He is a king forever! Be sure that today you are submitted to the king of kings and lord of lords.

He is holy - Luke 1:35.
Because her child was conceived of the Holy Ghost, Mary could be certain that her child would be holy also. He would be sinless. He would not be tainted by man’s sin nature because His conception would not be from an earthly father. He would be the one-and-only perfect sacrifice that would be offered for the sins of all the world!
John 1:29 KJV 1900
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
He alone would be the perfect sacrifice that would appease the wrath of God towards our sin!
1 John 2:2 KJV 1900
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
He alone, because He is holy, would offer Himself one time as a sacrifice for sins, never needing to be offered again!
Hebrews 10:12 KJV 1900
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
Hebrews 10:14 KJV 1900
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
The work of salvation was complete! Nothing more remained to be done! Nothing more remains for you to do today! God’s plan to redeem sinners was fulfilled by the sacrifice of His holy Son!
Application: My friend, do you believe that Jesus is holy? Do you believe that His sacrifice was altogether unique? Do you believe that He alone and nothing you could do could appease the wrath of God toward your sin? That is how the angels described Him when they delivered God’s message to Mary. Christian, today, thank God for sending His Son to be the sinless sacrifice for your sins!

He is the Savior - Matthew 1:21.
Read Matthew 1:21.
This description of Jesus is what ties it all together.
I am thankful today that He was conceived of the Holy Ghost.
I am thankful today that He is great.
I am thankful today that He is the Son of the Highest, the Son of God!
I am thankful today that He is the heir to the throne of David.
I am thankful today that He is a king forever.
I am thankful today that He is holy.
But without this last description of Jesus, the list would be incomplete. I am especially thankful today that He is the Savior.
That is who Jesus Christ is! That is the divine description of Jesus!
The angel declared that His name would be “Jesus.” His name means Savior. That is the essence of who He is and why He came. He would be called “Jesus” because He would save his people from their sins.
Jesus was sent to save His people and Gentiles also.
Matthew 12:18 KJV 1900
Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
Matthew 12:21 KJV 1900
And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
1 John 2:2 KJV 1900
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Yes, Jesus is the Savior.
One way I find this description unique from all of the others is that I can make it personal. He is my Savior. I have believed that what He did on the Cross was sufficient to save my soul. There was nothing I could do to save my soul. Jesus paid the price for my sin. He did all the work. I didn’t and couldn’t do anything to save myself. I simply believed in what He did. That’s all that God requires for the saving of your soul. It’s not about you and what you can do. It’s all about Him and what He did for you. That’s the beauty of the Gospel.
John 20:31 KJV 1900
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Application: So I ask you this morning, have you trusted in Christ alone to save you from your sins?

Conclusion

Jesus Christ is not like any other man; He was conceived of the Holy Ghost.
Jesus Christ is not just another prophet; He is great! He is far above all men and angels.
Jesus Christ is not the son of Joseph; He is the Son of God! He is the Son of the Highest!
Jesus Christ is not an imposter, He is the heir to the throne of David!
Jesus Christ is not a king; He is the king of kings and lord of lords. He will reign forever!
Jesus Christ is not like sinful man; He is holy. He is sinless.
Jesus Christ never needed to be saved from sin; He is the Savior of mankind.
That’s the divine description of Jesus. My friend, is that the Jesus that you believe in today?
