Psalm 61:1–3 ESV
1 Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; 2 from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, 3 for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.
Song of Solomon 5:2–6a ESV
2 I slept, but my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.” 3 I had put off my garment; how could I put it on? I had bathed my feet; how could I soil them? 4 My beloved put his hand to the latch, and my heart was thrilled within me. 5 I arose to open to my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the bolt. 6 I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.

Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.

It is not that she cannot get up out of bed, but that she will not. Impossibility is not the problem; unwillingness is. The bed is too warm, she is too comfortable, and getting up again would be too inconvenient. She thinks only of herself. Richard Brooks

a. Neglect

Slide
Hebrews 2:3 (ESV) — 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,
Slide
Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV) — 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Slide
Hebrews 13:15–16 (ESV) — 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

b. Discernment

Slide
Romans 12:1–2 (ESV) — 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Slide
Ephesians 4:22–24 (ESV) — 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

c. Idleness

Slide
1 Thessalonians 5:14 (ESV) — 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
Slide
2 Thessalonians 3:6 (ESV) — 6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

d. Unimportant

Slide
Luke 14:17–20 (ESV)
17 And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20 And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’

We make ourselves so comfortable in this world that at times we are unwilling to make the effort necessary to draw near to him. Our way is blocked by non-existent snags; we refuse to deny ourselves; the kingdom takes second place; we forget that drawing near to Christ is in our own best interests; we forget our calling; we are preoccupied and dreamy. There is still too much worldliness, corruption and hypocrisy in us, too great a willingness to justify ourselves and to make the laziness of others an excuse for our own sloth. Gary Brady[2]

Hebrews 3:12–15 (ESV) — 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

As for her, the trial is not over yet. There is still more to endure before the presence of Christ will be enjoyed afresh. How she must have wished (though in vain) that she had arisen and opened the door to him at his first knock. Where there is true grace residing in a soul, few things grieve a believer more, in missing Christ’s presence, than to know that their own sin, idleness and slighting of him is the cause. Richard Brooks

Matthew 26:75 (ESV) — 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Conclusion
John 21:17 (ESV) — 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
