Speaking to a group of college students in the Spring of 2013, former New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow, told the crowd that regardless of what happens with his career, his main goal is to impact lives, whether he is on or off the field. Regardless of the controversy that surrounds him, a survey taken by Forbes.com found that Tebow remains America’s most influential athlete. The NFL player did not answer questions about his release by the Jets or his career possibilities. He was invited to be part of a speaker’s series at the college, and spent the time talking with the moderator about his Christian faith, his competitive nature, his love of family, and his high school and college football careers. When asked about the Forbes survey, Tebow said it was a great honor. He said, “I see it as a great responsibility to be a role model for future generations That’s something I care about more than winning football games. When a kid is a hospital is fighting for his life and I’m trying to win a football game, what really matters? This game isn’t as important as a lot of us make it out to be. If I can give him a little bit of hope, I can do something that matters. That’s what I want my legacy to be about. That’s how I want to be remembered.” When asked about his future, Tebow repeated one of his favorite sayings: “I don’t know what the future holds but at the end of the day I know who holds my future.”—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell
