INTRODUCTION - Snow - End of the road in CA. Different when you are by yourself.
eli eli lama sabachthani - My God, my God, why have forsaken me? Jesus was quoting it from Psalm 22:1 .
Psalm 22 is significant because it shares details about the death of Jesus like when it says in Psalm 22:16-18
Psalm 22:16–18 (ESV)
16...they have pierced my hands and feet— 17 I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
Sounds familiar doesn’t it?
So what Jesus was doing was what Rabbi’s frequently did they would quote the first line of a passage to make their followers remember that passage. So He was teaching them in this moment, saying check out Psalm 22 that was actually about me right now.
But that was significant that He chose this? It reminds us from the start that Jesus sees
Psalm 22:1–2 (ESV)
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.
This was how Jesus felt, but how David, a man after God’s own heart felt. Honestly it was how Israel felt.
Throughout history they knew God was faithful, but it would seem like God would forget about them. 400 year i Egypt, Babylon, Greeks, Roman - Sepporis story.
In this moment, God felt far. He felt like he abandon them.
It will be dark soon - In your life it feels dark. Wondering where God is.
But I love that Jesus chose this psalm to highlight, because what he was also saying to his disciples that night - I am forsaken for you. I am made sin for you. I am despised and rejected so you can be accepted.
Which is why in verse 24 he concludes this by saying
When we felt like nothing, when we felt not worthy. God came to us. When David felt like a worm...

3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
He knows God is true to His word, but he is having a hard time believing that for himself…He then says.

6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
Maybe that’s where you are, but even still it shows Jesus
Psalm 22:24–26 (ESV)
24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!
CONCLUSION: Worm/Snow.

18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
Psalm 22:1 (ESV)
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
We know those words because of Jesus on the cross. But Jesus wasn’t saying those words he was quoting those words. From Psalm 22.
We have been looking at the Psalms in advent and today I would like to look at one of the most direct messanic psalm as we prepard our hearts for Christmas.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
This was not just the words of Jesus, this was the words of David, this was the words of all of Israel. Israel story has been one of hardship and suffering. Throughout all time, they were God’s chosen people yet most of their existance has been in misery. Most of their existance has been crying out to God and feeling unheard. This was israel’s story leading up to Jesus. They were taken to Eygpyt and enslaved. They were exiled in Babylon, between the OT and NT the persians took ver, than the Greeks, than the Romans. Each one killing and pillaginvg the whole time. They cryed out, but no answer. Silance.

That is where they were - They knew God was real but still struggled with
Maybe you understnad this becaues in the next verses he says: Psalm 22:3-6
3 Yet you are holy,

in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
He says I know my anscesters I know others who called out to you and you blessed them, but what about me? I am a worm, forgotten. That is way David felt, that is the way Israel felt, that is the way you and I often feel.
Why would David the man after God’s own heart feel this way, why would Isarael, God’s coventantal people feel that way. Why would Mary ad Joseph likely felt this way???????Check this compared to luke.
But why did Jesus choose this passage to draw attention to when on the cross?

Througout the whole thing it points back to the cross

Shows us that JEsus came to be forsaken, he came to be punished on our behalf, so we wouldn’t half to. As he says my God why have I forsaken me, He was forsaken so we wouldn’t have it.
But as we

Yet, when we get to New Testament. Jesus chose this Psalm to say this of me. He cries out My God…he calls himself a worm. A worm which would crawl up on try to lay its eggs and give new lfe, while in the process of giving new life the worm dies leaves a red mark and then flacks off three days later to white as snow.
So that Jesus can say, I felt that way too. I came down and suffered for you. What greater love is there than this?
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
